Leo Karhan Obituary
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday (April 7) at Weldon Funeral Home, 102 E. Main St., Penn Yan.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday (April 8) at the funeral home, followed by a committal service with military honors in Lakeview Cemetery in Penn Yan.
Leo was born in Geneva. He worked as a long-haul trucker, traveling to every state except two. He was well known as the local junk man, collecting scrap metal and recycling materials. Leo honorably served in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. Leo was a life member of the Penn Yan VFW and was a past Post Commander.
He is survived by his wife, Joann; daughter, Leah Heyl of Tyngsborough, Mass.; stepdaughters, Patricia (Norman) Swarts of Penn Yan, Teresa Hand (Bill Sequine) of Port Richie, Fla. and Elizabeth Hand (Louis McIntyre) of Avon; sons, Dennis Karhan Tyngsborough, Mass. and Kevin Karhan of Woburn, Mass.; stepsons, David (Elizabeth) Hand, James Hand and Michael Hand (Yvonne), all of Penn Yan; sisters, Sally Andrews of Penn Yan and Gail Townsend of Lyons; brothers-in-law, Eugene "Gene" Ledestich of Geneva, Emory "Emo" (Alyse) Ledestich of North Carolina, and Leola "Lee" McKenzie of Oregon; also several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews
He was predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Helen Wood.
