1947 - 2021

OVID - Leon A. Stannard, 73, of 7260 County Road 132, died at Strong Memorial Hospital on Sunday (January 3, 2021).

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday (January 7) at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday (January 8) in Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken.

All Covid-19 protocols will be in place, masks, social distancing and occupancy limitations. Please attend only if you're willing to adhere to those guidelines as set forth by NYS.

Leon was born in Ithaca on July 15, 1947, one of five sons to John L. and Martha (Rice) Stannard. After attending Interlaken High School, he joined the US Navy and served his country from 1966 to 1969. He worked in the motor pool at Willard Psychiatric Center, then Willard DTC and finally retired from Five Points Correctional Facility. After his retirement, he worked as a delivery driver for Growers Mineral Solutions of Ohio and Shephard Ford in Canandaigua, where he delivered buses and livery vehicles. Leon had been very active in the South Seneca Sports Boosters, life member of the South Seneca Sportmen's Club, VFW Post #6200 Auxiliary, Navy Seabee Veterans of America-Island X-19 of Syracuse, and the Interlaken Fire Department where he had also been fire chief.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Peggy; his brothers Philip of Interlaken, Keith (Colleen) of Ovid and Dale (Nicole) of Lodi; his sister-in-law, Cindy of Ovid; his nephew and nieces Scott of Cheektowaga and Kelsie and Darby of Lodi; and Peggy's extended family.

Leon was preceded in death by his brother, Gary; and a nephew, Kooper.
