Mike lived life to the fullest and will be fondly remembered and cherished by all who knew him. He was a beloved soul who touched many lives. Even while going through his own battle with cancer, he always made sure to put others first and ask, "don't worry about me, how are you?"

Mike was born January 25, 1951, in Geneva, N.Y. and attended Geneva Schools. He was a graduate of Geneva High School and went on to graduate from FLCC and play baseball at SUNY Brockport. After college, Mike played semi-professional baseball in Kitchener, Ontario and participated in many Recreational softball leagues. He also spent many days at Seneca Lake and Geneva Country Club where he excelled in golf. Mike enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1972 and was discharged in 1978. He worked as an Ontario County Sheriff for 20 years and then went on to become Inspector at the Finger Lakes Racetrack in 2005 and later became a State Investigator for The NYS Gaming Commission. Mike was a member of the Geneva School Board and Geneva Planning Board and often volunteered in the Geneva community.

The McDermott family would like to thank the Wilmot Cancer Center in Rochester and the Lipson Cancer Institute in Clifton Springs for their wonderful care and treating Dad like family. We are grateful for their kindness and guidance these past four years. In addition, we would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Clifton Springs Hospital for their compassion and care over the past few weeks. Also, to our many amazing friends for their visits, phone calls, conversation and friendships.

I'm so sorry to just find out about Mike. I knew him since the 70's and he was such a great guy. Even this past year I would see him at GFS getting the car worked on and he would always say hi.
My condolences to Arlene and the kids, and Terry.

Arlene,

I was sorry to hear about Mike's passing. I remember him from high school as a nice guy who always had a smile on his face. I regret not getting back to Geneva for the past two class reunions, especially the 50th. It would have been nice to see both of you there after so many years. Praying that the peace of Christ comforts you and the family at this time.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of a good friend. Mike and I played basketball at FLCC in 1969-70, the 2nd year of the programs existence. In fact on a road trip to the north country (Canton and Paul Smiths colleges), Mike a I were roommates. His obit hits the nail right on the head. Mike was a great athlete, but more importantly he was a great friend and teammate. It is with much sadness that I remember Mike and offer my heartfelt sympathies.

We are SO very sorry to hear about Mike´s passing. In the last year, as they fought HARD to battle their health challenges, Mike & Gary shared many memories bringing both tears & laughter. It´s the "belly laughs" that I will remember most. They BOTH lived lived & loved hard. Sending hugs, love & prayers to all of you. Hope they´re playing the back 9, pain free!
