Dear Joanne. I just came across Roy's obituary. I am very sorry about his passing, and want to express my sincere condolences. I wish that I had reached out much sooner. Having served with him and reporting to him, while in the Army in Italy, "Uncle Roy" (as we affectionately called him ... not to his face, of course!) was one of the smartest men I have ever known. Tough and kind. Demanding and compassionate. He took his job seriously, and cared for us like we were family. And the stories that I could tell! I don't know if you have heard them all ... or perhaps heard them too many times. There's the story about the "lost" jeep. And then there's the one about cabbage. And that's all I will say about that. My wife and I still go to the same Pensione that we used to stay at in Rasa, Italy, on TDY (Temporary Duty): the Gasthof Kaltenhauser. It is still run by the same family. We will be there again in September, and I will have a glass of wine (or several) in his memory. I hope that my email address is visible to you. It would be great to communicate.
