Sheila Essom Obituary

SENECA FALLS - Sheila Mae Essom, age 90, of Apex, North Carolina passed away on Monday, August 25, 2025.

Sheila was born on August 17, 1935, in Seneca Falls, N.Y. to the late Gilbert and Beatrice Potter. Sheila graduated from Mynderse Academy in 1953, Bowling Green State University in 1957 and top of her class at the Marion S. Whelan School of Practical Nursing in 1981.

Sheila and her husband Jack of 67 years lived and raised their three children, J. Timothy, Tracy, and Tanya in Seneca Falls, N.Y. In 1987 they relocated to Cary, NC. Sheila had various jobs in social work, banking and at the local Crayton Drug store while raising her family.

In 1996 Sheila and Jack retired to their home in Woodlake in Vass (Southern Pines), NC where she enjoyed the lake life, traveling to all their favorite destinations, watching, and playing golf. She was also an avid Bridge player, enjoyed bowling and of course all of her precious dogs throughout her life which gave her so much joy. There was not a daily crossword puzzle she did not solve.

In addition to her parents, Sheila is predeceased by her husband Jack and sister Barbara Batty.

Sheila is survived by three children, son J. Timothy Essom of Lansdale, PA, daughter Tracy (Jim) Moreland of Winder, GA, daughter Tanya (Charles) Durand of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren Julie, Jim, Ashley, and Angela; and two great grandchildren Camden and Maddox.

In loving memory of Sheila, we invite contributions to be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers, honoring Sheila's legacy. A memorial service for Sheila will be held Friday, August 29, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.
