Walter Wech Obituary

OVID - Walter Boyd "Pudge" Wech, age 73, longtime resident of the Ovid area, passed away at the Cayuga Medical Center on Tuesday (October 12, 2021). A word, a song, a look….our world was a better place because you were in it.

The family will receive friends at Covert Funeral Home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday (October 16). A funeral service will then be held at 2 p.m., followed by prayers of committal in Ovid Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Pudge's memory to a local charity of your choice.

Pudge was born in Mountaintop, Pa. on March 30, 1948, the oldest son of Walter and Bessie (Barber) Wech. Pudge attended Ovid High School and was a stellar football player. He spent his career working at Willard Psychiatric Center, retiring from the Willard DTC as a chief electrical engineer in 2003. He loved keeping his lawn in order with his John Deere fleet. His time was spent with his constant companion, a chihuahua he affectionately referred to as "The Mexican." A lifetime member of the South Seneca Sportsmen's Club, Pudge spent many years doing what he loved best, cooking great food and watching people enjoy it. Hunting was a favorite hobby in his younger years, then fishing became a source of good memories spent with family and friends. Pudge also had a passion for coin collecting and enjoyed the many hours he scrutinized each one and researched every bit of data he could find on his acquisitions.

He is survived by a daughter, Kelly (Dane) Daghita of Van Etten; son, Walter Boyd "Pudge Jr." (Amy) Wech Jr. of Ovid; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; siblings Robert (Juanita) Wech of Lodi, William Wech of Ovid, Elaine (Richard) Patterson of Elbridge, and Sue Johnson of Interlaken; a special aunt, Barbara Ann Gordner of Fairhope, Ala.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Suzann Wyckoff; and sister, Tracy Lynn Wech.

Pudge, growing up together in the best town to grow up in Willard during the 50's & 60's. Many a sand lot football games, then to watch you run over those little fellows in high school like a steam roller made us Willard proud! You taught me to hit low in football or suffer the pain lol. Last saw you years ago at the SSSC and we talked like the many years that seperated us was but a short time. RIP
