It is with great sadness that the family of Patricia Slattery McCarthy announces her passing. Pat McCarthy peacefully entered eternal rest on September 1, 2025. Pat was the beloved wife of Richard (Chuck) McCarthy, with whom she shared 64 years of happy marriage before his passing in 2019. She was a proud and loving mother to her son, Kevin McCarthy, and had great affection for her daughter-in-law, Kate Ballou. "GrammyPat", as she was known in her later years, was also a very proud and loving grandmother to her wonderful grandson, Bob McCarthy. Besides her son, Pat is survived by her brother-in-law, Peter McCarthy, and sisters-in-law Georgia McCarthy and Martha McCarthy. Pat was predeceased by her mother, Clara Slattery and her sister Caroline Clayton. Pat was born in Northampton, MA and was a graduate of Northampton High School and Smith College. Upon graduation from Smith, Pat and Chuck moved to Geiger AFB in Spokane, Washington, where Chuck served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Following Chuck's discharge from the Air Force, Pat and Chuck returned to Western Massachusetts, and settled in Longmeadow, where Pat has lived in the same clock filled house for the past 61 years. As her son went off to grade school in the early 1960s, Pat returned to school as well, receiving her master's in education from Springfield College. She then embarked upon a 40+ year career as a second-grade teacher in the Enfield Connecticut school system. After retiring from day-to-day teaching, she continued to educate children and adults as a docent at the Springfield Museum of Art, where she met a new group of friends that have provided much kindness and support over the past several years. Pat will be sadly missed by all who knew her. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 10 AM in St. Mary's Church, 519 Longmeadow Street, Longmeadow. A private burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Northampton. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Pat's honor may be directed to St. Mary's Church, or to a charity of one's choice.
