James Woodfin Bullard died on Sunday, September 21, following a cardiac event the night before. He was surrounded by his family when he passed.
Born in Atlanta in 1956, Jim was the only child of Judge James LaRue Bullard and Leonelle Baker Bullard. He grew up to be a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather. He was a man of immense warmth of spirit and generosity of heart that shaped the facets of his life. Jim's presence filled every room, his stories and humor lifting others and leaving them brighter. He leaves a legacy of adventure, nourishment, and joy.
Adventure was indeed a central theme throughout Jim's life. An avid outdoorsman and lifelong scuba diver, Jim found freedom in clear water and open spaces. Later, he relished traveling: exploring and photographing new places alongside his wife, Karen. Of all Jim and Karen's many destinations, they loved Scotland best. They returned to Scotland again and again until it felt like a second home. Jim's journeys with Karen were among his most treasured experiences.
Jim also devoted himself to cooking and sharing good food. He was a skilled pitmaster, having begun his barbecue career at the Cobb County Bar Association's infamous summer parties and going on to perfect the craft at countless gatherings with family and friends. Jim's cooking, which ranged from smoked meat to his signature peanut brittle, was an essential thread in the fabric of family tradition.
But Jim's greatest love was his family. As a husband and father, Jim gave his time freely to support his family's passions: serving as a Scoutmaster; volunteering as a marching band roadie; running sound and lights for Forsyth Central High School's arts programs; or even cheering at a Georgia-Georgia Tech game-sitting faithfully between his Bulldog wife and Yellow Jacket daughters, good-naturedly shielding each from the others' loyalties.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Karen Prosser Bullard; his children Brandon Bullard (Margaret), Stephanie Bullard Morgen (David), and Rebecca Bullard; his cherished grandson, Oliver Bullard; and his dog, Buddy. His family will remember him as a man who gave freely of himself, always placing love and laughter at the center of their lives.
A memorial to celebrate Jim's life will be held at the Knollwood Lakes Clubhouse in Lawrenceville, GA on October 12th at 4:00 PM. In honor of Jim's dedication to coral reef conservation, the family kindly requests in memoriam donations be made to The Coral Reef Alliance (
give.coral.org) in lieu of flowers.
