John Morton Obituary

John Ward Morton, age 54, of Cumming passed away July 13, 2015 after bravely facing a multitude of serious complications following an ATV accident in 2012. His long battle to recover was finally rewarded when he was set free to enjoy the ultimate healing in Heaven. "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)
Born Dec. 7, 1960 in Bristol, Tenn., he was the son of John Francis and Betty Morton. He is predeceased by his father, his paternal grandparents, Ward and Pauline Morton; and his maternal grandparents, G.L. and Marie Stophel.
Those left to cherish the memory of his wisdom, humor, kindness and love for family and friends are his wife and soul mate, Donna Gentry Morton of Cumming; sons, John Robert (J.R.) Morton of Knoxville, Tenn., Daniel Morton of Cumming; mother, Betty S. Morton of Cumming; sisters, Susan Morton Leonard and husband Mark of Cumming, Sarah Morton LaPlaca of Cumming and fiancé Jeff Simcox of Kingsport, Tenn.; and nieces and nephews, Christina LaPlaca and Corey Leonard of Cumming, and Beth Williams Smith and Zachary Canter of Fort Drum, N.Y.; John will also be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousin, in-laws, friends and his Black Lab, Sam Morton.
John had a very successful 26 year Career with AT&T where he became Senior Technical Director and earned the reputation as an exceptional problem solver and admired mentor. He was granted five U.S. patents in telecommunications development and was a key contributor when AT&T began assisting Apple with iPhone activations. The system developed to make the activations possible was officially named "John's Idea." He was a past member of CTIA, the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry, serving on working committees for industry standards, including the Cellular Fraud Task Force committee that established the ethics and criteria that were adopted by the American National Standards Institute.
He was a 1984 graduate of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn., where he earned a B.S. Degree in Computer Science. He served as president of the Tennessee Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity which, under his leadership, won the Buchanan Outstanding Chapter Award that recognizes the highest achieving and best-of-the-best chapters in the nation. Prior to his accident in 2012, John had been working on his MBA through Mercer University's Atlanta campus.
He was a 1979 graduate of Tennessee High School in Bristol, Tenn., where he was recognized as a "Viking Stand Out" as a starting offensive and defensive tackle on the football team. He was a four year letterman on the wrestling team, advancing to the state championship in 1979. He also competed in discus and shot put on the track and field team.
John attended Browns Bridge Community Church, was a member of the North Georgia Mountain Riders and was an avid, possibly the world's biggest, fan of University of Tennessee football.
Services will be held Friday, July 17, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming. The family will receive friends from 2-4 pm. and there will be a reception following the service.
Another service will be held in John's hometown church, Central Christian in Bristol, Tenn., at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 19. He will be laid to rest in a family cemetery in Bluff City, Tenn.
The family thanks the many wonderful friends who have prayed, supported and cared for them during this long and difficult road since John's accident.

John remains bigger than life in the hearts of all his UT friends. I miss his smile, his witt, and intellect. He was the real deal for sure. Jay and I still hold great memories of fun times with him and his family.

I had the pleasure of working with John during my 5 years at BellSouth Information Systems. He was truly a man of conviction. He also was a fellow parisioner at Midway UMC. Sad to hear of his passing and I pray that our Lord's holy spirit will comfort his family. Rest in peace, John.

Nothing can make this easier. No one would have chosen this for John. We all wanted him to heal, get stronger, return to us. But it was not to be. I will choose to remember the smiles, the laughter, the good times... Precious memories. Each member of our family has special thoughts and memories of John. His 54 years sped by, and now he is no longer physically with us. But the joy he brought into our lives will remain with us, a part of us until we are together again. You will always remain in my heart, precious John.

Donna, JR, and Daniel

My thoughts are prayers are with you all during this sad time.

Your Dad and I worked together on the AT&T Digital Life implementation. He was full of great ideas and knowledge of systems. He was fun to work with and I have missed him since the accident.

We will never forget the memories he gave us or his pride for anything he believed in. You all were at the top of that list.

So sorry for your loss. Death is never easy but knowing where he is now at least gives us a reason to rejoice in the fact we will see him again. I will continue to pray for the family as the void can never be filled. He was truly blessed to have a loving family that fought the fight with him every step of the way.

Sending my love to each of you after your long and rocky ride. Getting to know John as an adult, a husband and a father via Donna's FB posts has been truly a precious gift. Thank you so much, Donna, for sharing with us, and to Susan and Sarah for adding to the picture. Many thanks to Betty for raising such a fine man in which his sons can be proud to call father. Never again will I hear Rocky Top without thinking of John, and he will be dressed in orange wearing his wings. Keeping you in my prayers, always. xox

I miss you, my precious brother! You were a good man, a good father, a good husband, a good brother, a good son, a good uncle, a good friend. You accomplished a lot in your life, my brother. We are so proud of the legacy you have left through your work and your sons and all the lives you have touched. You got to see the world and embraced your life with adventure and passion. I will miss your stories, your sense of humor, your love, compassion, and generosity. You were always bigger than life, and not just in stature, and I've always been so proud of you. Go paint heaven orange, dear one. And sing Rocky Top with the angels. I am so glad that you have a new body in Christ and can run and dance, and feast at the table with our Lord and be free of that frail body that betrayed your beautiful mind and soul. My heart grieves that we will have no more "sibling weekends" together, as you called them. Or watch no more UT football games together, or take no more family cruises together. My heart is breaking. Tell Dad and Papaw and Mamaw and Ree-Ree, Aunt Phyllis, Uncle Danny McCall, Uncle Danny O'dell and Uncle Clarence, Papaw Stophel, and your dear father-in-law Mr Gentry and Scott, and all the ones you are with now who have gone on before us, how much I love and miss them. I look forward to seeing you "in a blink of an eye".
