W. White Obituary

W. Chandler White, Jr. Obituary
W. Chandler "Chan" White, Jr. was born, in Boston Massachusetts, to Willard C. White, Sr. and Beatrice Louise (Armstrong) White on August 21st, 1934. He passed peacefully from this world, after a long battle with dementia, on June 30th, 2022. His family moved to Holmdel, New Jersey in the mid 1940's to be near relatives while his father recovered from throat cancer. Chan met his beloved future wife, Alice Dix, in 9th grade home room at Red Bank Jr. High School in 1948. They started dating the next year while attending Red Bank Senior High School and graduated together in 1952. Chan was accepted to the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia and attended from 1952 to 1954. He joined the Army in January of 1955 and, after basic training at Fort Dix, was posted to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Chan proposed to Alice in late 1955 and they were married February 12, 1956. After being awarded early release from his service to pursue his education, Chan and Alice returned to Atlanta for him to finish his bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech, which he earned in 1959.
Chan was a driving force in the construction industry in Atlanta. He worked for mechanical contractors from 1957 until his retirement in 1999. In 1968, he and his partner, Wendell Brown, founded B&W Mechanical Contractors, Inc. The company grew and flourished under his direction as CEO and was one of the top 3 mechanical contractors in Atlanta, specializing in high rise construction, as a union contractor. He left his mark on the skyline of Atlanta managing the plumbing and heating & air conditioning installation during the construction of many of the larger buildings in midtown, like the AT&T Prominade, Ritz Carlton Buckhead and Peachtree Plaza hotel.
Along with his degree, Chan was a registered Professional Mechanical Engineer in the state of Georgia. He was a licensed Master Plumber and a Certified Mechanical Contractor in 5 states. While leading B&W, Chan was very active in the construction industry associations and held many leadership positions in these associations from 1981 to 2002. The associations he volunteered for include the Mechanical Contractors Association of Georgia, the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, the National Certified Pipe Welding Bureau, the Joint Apprenticeship Training Trust, and the Plumbers & Pipefitters Health & Welfare and Pension Trust. He was also appointed as a member of the Construction Licensing board of Georgia by then Governor Zell Miller in 1977.
As an active, life-long member of the Baptist church, Chan volunteered his time to hold the offices of Church Treasurer, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Superintendent of Sunday School and a choir member. Chan and Alice attended Headland Heights Baptist Church in East Point, Ga for 40 years, as well as Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, College Park, GA, Johns Creek Baptist Church and lately of First Baptist, Cumming, GA. Chan was also a member of the Gideons International and enjoyed distributing Bibles to high school and college aged youth. A dedicated jogger, Chan's hobbies included Alpine Skiing, Travel, computers and piloting small aircraft.
Chan is survived by his high school sweetheart, Alice D. White, and their children, Beth (Joe) Sewards, Chip (Christy) White, and Bobbi (Patrick) Hardison. He has 6 grandchildren, Cullen Bass, Chad (Mary) White, Tom Bass, Morgan (Kaine) Granger, Carolynn (James Green) Bass and Zane Sewards. Chan was pre-deceased by both of his parents, and his only brother, David A. White. He loved greatly and will be missed as a positive influence on those he encountered.
