Demeke Tekle-Wold Obituary
In 1977, Demeke and Marta co-founded Project Mercy, which grew into a development organization serving communities in Ethiopia through schools, hospitals, and agricultural programs.
Marta gave birth to 5 children: Sam, Mikki, Yemi, Bete, and Lali. Together, the couple also created a home in Fort Wayne for more than 70 children, including 7 they adopted: Desta, Meseret, Abebech, Sewlanchi, Dirshaye, Belaye and Zenash.
Demeke was preceded in death by Marta, sons Sam and Mikki, his parents Teklewold Gebre and Asegedech Wondemageghu, and brothers Alemishet, Mulugeta and Worku. He is survived by his children, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, brothers Sirak and Betru, and countless loved ones. His funeral services were held in Addis Ababa, the city in which he passed and was laid to rest, on August 4, 2025. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at International Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 7930 Eastern Ave. NW, Washington, D.C. 20012.

I met this wonderful family through work when they came to Fort Wayne. The amount of courage it took to do what they did. They came to my place of business frequently and we all got to know them and some of their children. Their family was an asset to Fort Wayne and it was always interesting when we talked and they shared their culture. After a few years I transferred to a different location and lost touch. My world was a better place because I got to know them.
