Dorothy Collins Obituary

DOROTHY Y. (WILTSE) COLLINS, 84, of Fort Wayne, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Regency Place. Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Inglewood, Calif., she was the daughter of Daniel E. and Eleanor C. (Faccini Runswick) Wiltse. With the coaching of her father, she excelled at sports at an early age. At the age of 12 she led her team to the Southern California Girl's Softball Championship before a crowd of more than 25,000. She pitched for the Fort Wayne Daisies from 1945 to 1950. She retired with a lifetime ERA of 1.83. In 1981, Dottie helped to organize the first exhibition game for former players which renewed interest in the league. Her determined efforts resulted in the All American Girl's Professional Baseball League Players Association and the movie "A League of Their Own". She was instrumental in getting the league recognized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and had the privilege of opening the first Women in Baseball Display in Cooperstown. She was also an avid bowler and golfer and won the Women's City Golf Championship in 1971. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks B.P.O.E 155 where she won numerous golf championships and organized the Elks Youth Golf and Bowling Leagues during the 1960's and 1970's. She was honored in 2005 when the book "Dottie Wiltse Collins - Strikeout Queen of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League" was published telling her life story. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Michael) Tyler; grandsons, David (Stacy) Gilbert and John (Bethany) Gilbert; and six great-grandchildren, all of Fort Wayne. I just learned that this wonderful lady had passed this past August. I had seen that some of the ladies visited Waukegan, Illinois around the 4th of July, and was so sad that I missed it. I had really wanted to meet this lovely lady.

God bless her family, and may they continue to gain strength from her wonderful memory.

I do not know Dorothy Collins. But I admire her. Thanks to Penny Marshall for making my favorite movie of all time, A League of Their Own. If not, I would have never known about women like Dottie - and their great athleticism - and contributions to the national spirit during a time of war as a member of the AAGPBL.

Sincere sympathies to the family of "Dottie".

My heartfelt thoughts go out to Aunt Dottie's family. Even though I never met her, we kept in touch over the years via genealogy / Christmas cards. She enjoyed sharing memories of the Wiltse family (especially their history in baseball). You were always an inspiration Dottie.

In addition to being a great pitcher and favorite of the Fort Wayne fans, Dottie was always very nice to the young girls that played for the Junior Daisies - I was one of those young girls and I remember her well. Sincere condolences to her family.

Dottie taught me to bowl at the Elks at a young age and she was someone that I always respected and admired. May your memories bring you comfort in this time of sorrow.

To the Collins Family, My prayers are with you all in your time of sorrow. I met Dottie thru my Mom (Lee Kostoff). I grew up watching her Bowling at the Elks and elsewhere. She gave me lots of tips when I was either bowling or playing softball. I have some great memories also when she came to watch us play at Packard park, and had a beer with us at the Dugout after the games. I will always remember her fondly. Know in your hearts that shes playing ball or bowling ,or giving instructions for both up in Heaven.

My heartfelt condolences to all of Dottie's family. I'm sure she's pitching in heaven even as she pitched for many causes on this earth, especially for the AAGBBL and the AAGPBL Players Association. She was definitely among the best this country has to offer.

Sincerely,

Merrie Fidler, AAGPBL Historian and Players Association Secretary

To All,
I am so sorry to hear that Dottie has left you. I just wanted you to know that my mom, Ginny Nesbitt, already had a tee time set up for Dottie. They can now play golf all day long and they can make the rules as to how long the day is.

Many years ago I was blessed to meet three women who played in the AAGPBL. I will never forget it.
I wasn't lucky enough to meet or know Dottie but it sounds like she touched many people. My deepest sympathy to the family.

My sincere condolences to the family. It is hard to lose a loved one no matter what the circumstances happen to be.

I never had the priveledge of meeting Dottie. I was turned on to her story after seeing the movie and have spent time researching the league.

She was an inspirational woman whose accomplishments paved the way for future generations of females to flourish in the world of sports.

Thank You.

Condolences to Dottie's family. I met Dottie as a result of having a loved one at Regency Place where she was one of the few resiedents you could always count on to have a smile and a good attitude. She was helpful and concerned about other residents until the very end and I will miss seeing her every day. Also, I grew up near Packard Park and I'm sure I saw her play baseball as my Aunt Mary (Thayer) played with the Daisies on a Magnavox team and we saw many games. What a great lady!!

I never had the pleasure of meeting Dottie, but my mom played in the Women's City Golf Tournement with her and also knew her from bowling. Mom would often talk about Dottie and tell stories about that time, including stories that Dottie told her from the AAGPBL days. Sadly, Mom, Dottie and some of their friends have now passed away, but I can't help but believe that they are together again and enjoying an occasional round of golf, bowling or baseball.
