St. Joe Center 6th Grade 1957. In 1957, I wasn't a big fan of my Greatest Teacher, Jesus Christ. But, He was about to fix that when I met the 2nd Greatest Teacher in my life, Mr. Gaines. Mr. Gaines' love of life and the Lord, his positive & encouraging attitude, the daily pledge of allegiance with Guideposts readings, Hershey bars that were THROWN ACROSS THE ROOM to you; ENCOURAGED TO BE EATEN & SAVORED immediately in front of your classmates WITHOUT HAVING TO SHARE for saying wise things and wining spelling bees was the exciting highlight of many days, no matter who received the prize. Discipline (trap squeezes) was - in hindsight - fair and swift as Mr. Gaines had teaching to do, not babysitting. Over several weekends, Mr. Gaines showed my cousins and I how to design and build a clubhouse - I mean really build a clubhouse using professional techniques.
Sadly, I just saw Mr. Gaines' obit today. I would have traveled from Texas in the blink of an eye to honor Mr. Gaines.
R.I.P. Mr. Gaines and thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking a really broken kid and sharing with me, and so many others, your guideposts!

Mr. Gaines was my 6th grade teacher. What a fun year I had with him as a teacher! He knew how to make learning fun, not to mention the giant candy bars he would give out as prizes for spelling bees! Mr. Gaines was so influential in our lives that we started attending his church, Grace Point Nazarene. Rest in peace Mr. Gaines and prayers for your wife and family.

May he rest in God's sweet peace. I had the pleasure of being his nurse. What a thoughtful and kind man. He would often pray for us as we did our jobs. He also has a wonderful family. He will be missed.

Sorry for your loss. May you draw close to our loving god by reading his word and find comfort in the hope that he gives us all, of seeing our loved ones again in a beautiful new paradise home here on earth.

I was so saddened to see the notice of the passing of Mr. Gaines. He was my 6th grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary and I worked on staff with him when I was a teacher for 3 years at St. Joe Elementary. He was one of the kindest and most caring teachers that I can remember. His positive attitude toward teaching and students was one of the main reasons that I became a teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
