EUGENE PARKER Obituary

EUGENE PARKER, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016. Born Feb. 24, 1956, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Fletcher Stephens and Jessie Parker. In his early years, he attended Concordia High School where he was a star basketball player and a two-time Allen County Player of the Year. He set a sectional-record of 45 points in a victory over Wayne High School, before there were 3-pointers, a record that still stands today. He attended Purdue University where he studied business management. He was also a four-year starter on the Purdue men's basketball team where he was a team captain for two years and earned All-Big Ten awards and the John Wooden Award as the MVP for Purdue. Following his collegiate career, Eugene played for Athletes in Action and was selected for the 1978 U.S. National Team. In the same year, he was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, but chose to pursue his Law Degree at Valparaiso University where he was a graduate assistant coach. In 2002, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Eugene accepted Christ as his personal Savior as a youth. He attended Union Missionary Baptist Church where Clyde Adams was the Pastor. He later joined Agape Christian Center, now Summit Church, where he remained a faithful member under the leadership of Rev. Al Jennings, II. He started his professional career with Barrett & McNagny. In 1986, he joined Burt, Blee, Dixon & Sutton and became a partner. He started his own firm, Parker & Associates, in 1993. He brought former client Roosevelt Barnes, Jr. on as his partner and later the firm was renamed Maximum Sports Management. In 2012, Parker merged Maximum Sports Management with other top sports agencies to form Relativity Sports, where he was the CEO of Relativity Football. Parker had represented numerous high-profile athletes, including Hall of Fame inductees Derrick Brooks, Walter Jones, Curtis Martin, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Aeneas Williams, and Rod Woodson. He was regularly mentioned in national sports stories as he continued to negotiate ground-breaking contracts for his clients throughout his career. It remained Eugene's top priority to attain maximum value for his clients and instill in them an understanding of the business side of professional sports. Eugene was selected by Black Enterprise Magazine in 2005 as one of the 50 most powerful Blacks in sports. He has similarly been honored as one of the leading agents in professional sports by other publications, including Forbes Magazine, Sports Business Journal, Sports Illustrated, and ESPN. On Aug. 24, 1979, Eugene married the love of his life, June Parker. Eventually, to this union, were born five beautiful children. Eugene and June celebrated 36 wonderful years of marriage. He was most proud to be a devoted husband and loving father. He was a legendary man who exemplified family, faith, and friendship. Surviving are his wife, June Parker; daughter, Tai Parker; sons, Eugene Jr., Brandon, Solomon, and Austin; sisters, Tammy Parker and Debbie Parker; maternal aunts, Elizabeth Brown, Sharon Lindsay, and Marlene McDonald; paternal uncles, Samuel (Bertha) Stephens, Cleophus (Janie) Stephens, and Nathaniel (Alice) Stephens; two paternal aunts, Ceola Stephens and Magnolia Davis; aunts, Polly Smith, Maria (Leo) Walker, and Gloria Smith; uncles, Clarence Smith and Robert Smith; Goddaughter, Demetria DeYampert; lifelong friends, L.T. So sad to hear of Eugene's passing. What a great guy, too soon gone. I met him several times when my Dad coached his HS ALLSTAR team and as a contemporary at Purdue and the Krannert School. He was way before his time bridging races, cultures, religions and "identities". He was absolutely the Gold Standard for how the athletes at Purdue interacted with the student body, faculty and administration. He'll be sorely missed.

On behalf of the Purdue Alumni Association and the Boilermaker Business Exchange Hall of Fame Committee, we have voted Eugene into our first class to be honored/celebrated at an awards ceremony in Indianapolis at the end of Sept. Is there someone from the family I can work with to ensure his inspirational life story is honored appropriately and coordinate family participation in the celebration?

Please contact Jeff Powers, Purdue BSM '79 ([email protected]/317-313-2655)

God Bless Eugene and may he be seated at the right hand of the Lord.

I was a classmate of Eugene's at Concordia. He was a person of incredible integrity all through high school. He was humble, worked hard and managed to stay centered in spite of all the buzz around him. He went on to lead and inspire others throughout his career. Gone much too soon. My condolences to his wife and family. Rest in God's merciful arms, Eugene.

My brother Kipp and I said that we have never heard anyone say any thing negative about Eugene. He denied himself and was God's servant. He never let success change him. He stayed the same over the years. What a great example he has set. Eugene has set examples of how to be a good man. To the family I am sorry for your loss. I miss Eugene already but knowing he is with God is special. He has inspired me.

Some twenty years ago, like yesterday, we remember Eugene walking into our home and giving our son his first opportunity as a young legal professional fresh out of law school. We knew Eugene was a special Christian man the moment he walked through our door. We treasure his life and his ability to mentor young men to do positive things in society. From the entire McKenzie family, "Bravo Eugene" on a life of service, a life well lived.

To Ray and the family, you have our deepest sympathy on the passing of Eugene, I remember being in the Children's choir with him at Union Baptist, I would always tell him to sing louder! He was an awesome and humble person, anyone that had the honor to know him was truly Blessed, he will truly be missed by not only the sports world but in our world! May GOD Bless his wife and children and his family. I thank you all for sharing this awesome man with all of us! tina goings and family.

What a privilege to worship alongside the patriarch of the Parker family. Teaching him in bible school was always entertaining & I learned much from him and Roosevelt's contributions. He remained a jokester, always coming through with a quiet punchline. Keeping June, his children, and the balance of the Parker family in our prayers.

April 15, 2016

From the Carolinas to Las Vegas, Eugene would always say, Lil Sis, I'm only a phone call away. We were not biological siblings, but Eugene is Big Bro and Trish is Lil Sis. When my Birthday comes on Tuesday, I know I'll still wait for his Happy Birthday Lil Sis phone call.

June (Mrs. Parker) beautiful wife of Eugene (Mr. Parker), your beautiful children, Austin, Brandon, Eugene Jr., Solomon and Tai, and family, your husband and father was a wonderful man, exceptional human being, and, an extended family member to so many of us who were Blessed to have him enter into and remain in our lives, regardless of the reason(s).

We shall forever reflect upon his compassionate spirit, encouraging, inspiring, logical and uplifting conversations filled with infinite wisdom, his considerate, kind and respectful manners and his unique way of making us feel cared about and loved as if we were his own flesh and blood. Eugene had a gentle and understanding way in which to provide each of us with Life and Living' lessons of Life.

Regardless, if you were a young person seeking advice and direction, or, the parent of a young person aspiring to understand the business workings of the sports world, Eugene made it clear for anyone to understand through his conversations and instructions.

Even when Eugene would say, We all have choices. For example, your choices to consider when you wake up in the morning and before you get out of bed may be: Do you want to roll over or roll out? and, then he went on to explain all the different variables on how to accomplish both in productive and successful ways.

Yes, Eugene has always been only' a phone call away but, if I could have the special honor and privilege to have one more phone call, I wouldn't hang up the phone because I'm not ever saying, Bye Bye, Big Bro as your voice lingers in my thoughts and shall always remain as the voice of wisdom when I consider choices and decisions that I make.

From Our Family to Yours, we shall Forever Love the Parker Family . . .

Condolences to the family and friends of Eugene Parker. Our family home was next door to his grandmother on Eliza Street. Growing up I remember Eugene as being a kind, loving grandson. Over the years whenever our paths met he would keep me updated on how she was doing up until her passing. Like his grandmother he too was a very kind hearted person. He will be truly missed.
