GERALD SERMERSHEIM Obituary

GERALD "JERRY" SERMERSHEIM, 75, passed away Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023. Jerry will be remembered by his loved ones for his devotion to his family and faith in God. He was a loyal husband and best friend to his wife, Patty, of 54 years. Together, Jerry and Patty actively shared their faith in their community and parish of 50 years, St. Joseph Catholic Church. He spent countless hours with his five children, which included encouraging a love of gardening, the value of hard work, and spending time together. His love of coaching his own kids enabled him to mentor many other children through the years, fostering his players' confidence and growth. He felt great pride as he watched them grow into the men they are today. Jerry was a graduate of Purdue University in structural engineering. He owned his own company for much of his career, designing parking garages and bridges, including numerous garages for Purdue University. He was a loyal Boilermaker and avid sports fan! He is survived by his wife, Patty; the legacy of his children, Samantha (Mike) Verslype, Gretchen (Matt) Robles, Luke (Kristen) Sermersheim, and Paul (Molly) Sermersheim; his sister, Alice (Jim) Snellenberger; and brother, Glenn (Sheila) Sermersheim. Jerry is also survived by his 18 grandchildren, Sam, Henry, Anna, William, Evelyn, Charlotte, Ruby, Sophia, Jack, Peter, Annie, Katelyn, James, Thomas, Josephine, Autumn, Ellie, and Georgia. He was preceded in death by his son, Adam; his parents, Sam and Rita Mae; and sister, Lynne. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2213 Brooklyn Ave., with calling one hour prior. Visitation also from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, at Divine Mercy Funeral Home, 3500 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne, with Rosary at 4 p.m. Burial will be in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Memorial contributions may be made to Masses at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society or St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brooklyn Ave. To sign the online guestbook visit www.divinemercyfuneralhome.com

My dear Patty and family. We are so sorry to hear about Jerry passing. Thinking about you and your family brought back a lot of memories of our time at St Joseph Church and school. The times we spent volunteering at the Church and school as our kids grew up. Such wonderful memories.
You all are in our prayers.
