James Kelley Obituary

JAMES E. KELLEY, 87, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at his home in Fort Wayne. Born on a small farm in Decatur, on June 3, 1918, he was one of nine children raised by Charles W. and Minerva (Leichty) Kelley. He graduated from Spencerville High School and studied tool and die making at the General Electric Apprentice School, in Fort Wayne. Moving beyond his formal education, he became a self-taught entrepreneur who quickly learned by doing. He actively pursued his passion for automobiles, flying and golf, turning these interests into successful businesses. He was Chairman of Kelley Automotive Group formed in 1952, which eventually included automobile dealerships in Fort Wayne, Decatur and Evansville, In., along with others in Florida and Georgia. He formed Fort Wayne Leasing in 1954, a major tractor/trailer leasing and rental operation, which he sold to Ryder Truck Rental in 1979. He also began Jim Kelley Leasing in 1969, a pioneer in retail vehicle leasing, to better serve his customers throughout the United States. He was a leader in the aviation field for over 60 years. He was a co-founder with Lester Myers of Myers Field, where he and his partner formed Kelley Flying Service, later moving it to Baer Field. Kelley Flying Service, renamed Fort Wayne Air Service, was based at Fort Wayne International Airport for almost 40 years. He was a certified flight instructor teaching hundreds of students to fly, including both his son and grandson. In addition to providing air charter services, he had become by the mid-1980s one of the leading independent resellers and lessors of corporate jet aircraft. He owned Fairview and Brookwood Golf Courses as well as Sycamore Hills Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus and co-developed with his son, Tom. The latter reflected their desire to bring to Fort Wayne a championship-level golfing experience. He was an unrelenting giver to the community, donating his time and money to many charitable causes, particularly those organizations that helped the needy. These included the McMillen Center for Health Education, Fort Wayne Rescue Mission, the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Wayne, Washington House and Youth for Christ. He was a founding member of the Mad Anthony Charity Classic for Children and a leading benefactor of Canterbury School. His love of farming took him to Eastern Europe where he operated farms and grain elevators. He flew numerous trips himself delivering medical personnel and supplies to the needy in Moldova, a republic situated between Romania and Ukraine. Recognizing his substantial humanitarian contributions on the local, national and international fronts, former Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon awarded him the "Sagamore of the Wabash," declaring him Indiana's citizen of the year in 2001. He is survived by daughters, Sue (Mike) Horton, Barbara (Martin) Kraegel; son, Tom (Patty) Kelley, all of Fort Wayne; step daughter, Carlabeth (Paul) Mathias of Fishers, Ind.; brother, John of Fort Wayne; sisters, Ruth Jansen of North Port, Fla., Mary Kelley of Fort Wayne, Dorothy Kimes of Auburn and Fay Deright of Murietta, Calif.; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Lavon Kelley; two brothers, Richard and Robert; and one sister, Lucille Kelley. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at The Chapel, 2505 West Hamilton Road, Fort Wayne, with calling from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at The Chapel. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery. Preferred memorials are to Mr. Kelley's favorite charities or to the Kelley Family Foundation. Arrangements by D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road.

Not sure what to say?

Our deepest sympathies to the Kelley family. We first met Jim in March, 2000. He was a real gentleman and such a kind person as noted by so many in the newspaper. He was a first cousin of my father. I visited him at his home two years ago and recorded some of childhood his memories. He was a giant among the Kelley’s. His 'Family History' gave me great impetus to continue my genealogical studies. He will be missed and long remembered by us all.

To The Kelley Family- We were saddened to hear of Mr. Kelley's passing. Jim was such an inspiration to all who knew him. What a legacy he has provided to your family!! We moved to Ft. Wayne in 1985 and quickly became acquainted with the Kelleys.Through business, politics, charities, sports, etc.,it was very apparent that Jim and his family represented all that is good about being good corporate/community citizens. Jim was such a warm and caring person. It was obvious that his positive fingerprints had touched many facets of Ft. Wayne.

He was a very engaging person, who made everyone, who met him, feel special. If you needed a new car, Jim knew the "perfect" one for you. If you wore glasses, he wanted to hook you up with a laser surgeon.

His enthusiasm and caring attitude was unbelievable. God blessed so many, when He created Jim Kelley. He has set the bar high for us to imitate. He will be a tough act to follow, but one who we must attempt to emulate. He will be sorely missed.

With warmest blessings and love,we pray for peace and healing for Jim's entire family.

I remember Jim in 1928 when his family farmed the farm across the road from us. We were two bare-foot, toe-headed boys who snuck away to skinny-dip in the gravel pit. This was during the depression years. About once a week we kids would have a feast on day-old bakery goods from Perfection Bakery that were meant for the chickens. We both played in the school band and were in the same class at the General Electric Apprentice School. Later I worked for him as a pilot. He was a remarkable person with a great personality and a fantastic memory. He was a great friend. I will have many lasting memories. Ruth and I offer our sincere condolences to Tom and the family.

When I heard of Mr Kelley's passing on the news the first thing that came to mind was Jim Kelley Buick. I grew up on Masterson St and the memories of walking down Masterson to Calhoun and seeing Jim Kelley Buick the beautiful cars in the lot and the show room. The repair shop that you could see on Masterson and Wallace st. the guys working so faithfully memories how they linger. I recall when I was purchasing a car and had problems I was directed to go see Mr Kelley and yes he did work it out for me. This community has suffered a great loss, but Mr. Kelley has received his reward. His work on earth is done and the works he done has spoken for him during this time. May God grant you peace during your time of bereavement.

It has been nearly 24 hours since I heard of the passing of Jim Kelley, and my thoughts and prayers go out to family and friends whom he has left behind.

A Huge Thank You goes out to Jim for the influence he had on my life at an early age nearly 40 years ago. See my father, Don Howard worked in Wisconsin for J.I. Case and did business with Jim's Leasing company back around 1965. My father was recomended by Jim for a position at Magnavox in Fort Wayne and it was the begining of my calling Fort Wayne my hometown. But there is more.... The movers moved our stuff to Indiana, but we flew. Jim brought his plane to Racine, Wisconsin, and personally flew us to Fort Wayne. As we were crossing over Lake Michigan, Jim invited me to be his "co-pilot" after awhile, he left and went back to talk with my folks leaving me in charge. (Ok, it was auto-pilot, but he told me with a wink and a nod to keep an eye on things for a few minutes).

That friendship grew into business loyalty, as my folks always bought their cars from Jim and always had them serviced there too.

Thank you so much for everything, and may we continue to pass along to each other the lessons learned from Jim Kelley.

Jim's favorite way of intoducing me ever since I was 15 years old was "This is Bobby - when I first met him, he didn't have a rag, look at hime now, he's ALL rags!" Here's to our memories of the old Meyers Field airport days and the many years we called him Friend. Our Sympathies to the entire Kelley family and the Ft. Wayne community.

My condolences to the family and friends of Jim Kelley.

As a reporter for The News-Sentinel through the '70s and mid-'80s, I developed a lot of respect for Jim, his business acumen and his contributions to the community.

But I've always had a warm memory of his kindness to me at a press event for Sen. Birch Bayh. I was covering it for what was then widely known as a conservative Republican newspaper and Jim was then Fourth District chairman for the Democrats.

Jim went out of his way to talk to me privately at that function and thank me for my coverage of his party's events over the years. He told me he was always comfortable with my reporting, because it represented "what actually was said" and not how I interpreted it.

Since that was what I had always tried to build my career on, Jim's words always meant a great deal to me.

And that act was a reflection of the man he was ... that he easily put aside partisan politics to compliment a reporter for the "opposition" paper.
