JOHN MABE Obituary

JOHN "JIM" M. MABE, 83, of Fort Wayne, died on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013. Born in Greenville, Tenn, he was the son of the late Earl and Pauline Mabe and stepmother, Hilma Mabe after his mother's death. The Army veteran was a member of American Legion Post 47. He retired from Tokheim in 1992, after 37 years of service. He was a hard worker through life and in retirement; he loved to garden and pass out tomatoes to everybody. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Susie Mabe; sons, James (Susan) Mabe and Jason Mabe, both of Fort Wayne; daughters, Lorena Mabe of Monroeville, Jeanette (Scott) Schmidt of Hoagland, Jonna Sorrell, and Denise (Dave) Conner, both of Fort Wayne; brother, WM.G. (Shirley) Mabe; sister, Fannie Kate King; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother, Kenneth Mabe. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at Covington Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. He will be laid to rest at Covington Memorial Gardens. Preferred memorials to the American Heart Association or Diabetes Association. www.covingtonmemorial.com

I met John Mabe in 1985, while I was still on active Duty in the Army. He became my father-in-law and my friend. Often during those few years of the remainder of the 1980s, and after he had gotten off working 3rd shift at Tokheim, he would bring me to McDonalds for a fish sandwich.

I enjoyed much of the time I spent with him and had the occasional to reminisce privately about the man that I knew as I did some work on my basement. It was particular pertinent as I learned from John that kerosene was a good solvent for paints, stains, and polyurethane -- a necessary lesson for the task at hand. And as I worked I remembered other times we shared together. I remembered when Denise drove through a fence, damaging the front of the car, and that I enjoyed helping him replace the entire front.
Seeing John Mabe take on jobs that would have seemed too large and too daunting, but take them on slowly and methodically, gave me the awareness of what I could accomplish, and the confidence to take on otherwise overwhelming tasks.

The last time I saw John was during an impromptu visit in 2010. He greet me with a smile and seemed genuinely disappointed when I had to leave. He was, to me, a mentor and a friend, who would more often greet any circumstance with a smile than a frown and he will be missed.
