Julia Maloley Obituary

JULIA ANN MALOLEY, 93, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2006, of cancer, in Fort Wayne. Born Julia Ann Ellis of Grand Rapids, Mich., she graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Sociology. She worked as a psychiatric social worker prior to her marriage to Al Maloley of Fort Wayne. They began a courtship after meeting at a wedding, in Detroit. They married in 1940 and settled, in Fort Wayne, where she supported Al in his efforts to build the Maloley Grocery Store chain. She embraced the Fort Wayne community, tirelessly volunteering her time and support for the arts and social services. She served as President of the Women's Committee of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and chaired fundraisers for the Fort Wayne Art Museum. She hosted guest musicians and artists in her home; helped develop the art museum's gift shop; and supported the Fort Wayne Ballet Company and Civic Theater. She also gave her time generously to the Family Children's Service of Fort Wayne, serving as President. She often aided in adoption proceedings. Together, she and Al enjoyed reading and the study of history. They had a curiosity about other cultures and traveled extensively, often with friends. Greece, Africa, Spain and Portugal were favorite points of destination. A Golfer and bridge player, Mrs. Maloley was a member of the Fort Wayne Country Club. Since 1980, she and Al have wintered at their home, in Sea Island, Ga. Her talent for interior design made their home a feature on the Sea Island tour of homes. An avid gardener, she appreciated her membership in the Sea Island Garden Club. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Fort Wayne and was a member of PEO Sisterhood. She had two daughters. The late Nancy Ann Maloley, who served in the Nixon, Reagan and Bush 41 White House Administrations, and Pamela Maloley Morris of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Alfred Maloley and one grandchild Alfred Morris, who attends the Culver Military Academy; as well as several nieces and nephews. Private family funeral services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church. As Chairman of the Corcoran Gallery of Art's Women's Committee and as a personal friend of Nancy's and a neighbor of Pam's, I want to send our love and prayers to all of Mrs. Maloley's family. The Women's Committee were all so fond of Nancy and met her lovely parents through her. I have relayed this sad news to all our members. With very best regards, Laurie Coughlin

Mrs. Maloley was a friend of my mother's Mary Eggeman Fox and I recall the bridge games as a child when we lived in Kirkwood Park. My sincere sympathy to her family on the loss of a great lady.
