THE REV. PHILIP V. MORTENSEN

THE REV. PHILIP V. MORTENSEN, 72, took his final trip through the gates of Heaven on Monday, April 3, 2017, in Port Orange, Fla. He was welcomed by his parents, the Rev. David and Muriel Mortensen, Fran Mortensen, his wife of 42 years, and his grandson, Jonathan "Smiles" Mortensen, but most importantly, his Lord and Savior, Jesus. Pastor Phil was often seen in one of his Hawaiian shirts or one of his "Mr. Roger's sweaters." He had a jolly soul, a projecting voice, a generous heart, and a smile for anyone who crossed his path. Mortensen graduated from Fort Wayne Bible College in 1974, and then earned his master's degree from Huntington University in 1989. He was passionate about bringing the Body of Christ together to minister to and empower the poor. In an addition to pastoring Fellowship Bible Church and Love Church for 42 years, he authored two books "For God So Loved the Inner City" and a devotional, "Quiet Time Questions With Jesus", and was a fan of the Michigan Wolverines, Detroit Tigers and Lions. Surviving are his wife of seven years, Norma, who brought him much happiness; son, Michael (Christine) Mortensen; daughter, Mary Ann (Andre) Goodwell; eight grandchildren; stepchildren, David Hollingsworth, Jim (Kristie) Hollingsworth, Amy Hollingsworth (Mike) Hayter, and Lee (Stacie) Hollingsworth; 10 step grandchildren; brother, David (Morgan) Mortensen; and sister, Mari Mortensen. A Celebration of Life service is 3 p.m. Saturday, April 22, 2017, at First Assembly of God, 1400 W. Washington Center Road, with calling one hour before. Hawaiian shirts are welcomed. Visitation is from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017, at Love Church, 1331 E.
