"When you have friends who check on you and want nothing but the best for you, keep them dear. Such souls are rare." -A.A. Milne

That can very well be said about Fr. Phil Widmann. I knew Fr. Phil for almost 40 years and if there's one word that could sum up what he was, it would be loyal.

Many times he made sure that everything was going well with me- offering a ride home if I needed it, one time checking the neighborhood for a suspicious person, getting together for lunches and dinners with our friends, disclosing what was going on his life and and church- I always knew we were oftentimes on the same page and I'll always remember that about him.

He was very encouraging. If music was going to be involved at a daily Mass (this was at St. Jude in Fort Wayne), he would tell me, "Here, you take care of it- you're better than me on this!"

He was very prayerful- very devoted to the Rosary and the Blessed Sacrament.

He also loved animals. He raised Pug dogs for many years- like Mei Ling and Su Long. Then he raised Persian cats- Oda Mae, Roulette, Bonnie Blue, Fiona.

The last time we met was at my sister-in-law's birthday party. It was painful to watch him struggle with the Parkinson's and he grumbled about it. He also couldn't understand why I had moved to Florida due to the weather and lack of real seasonal change, but he accepted the fact that I was closer to my family there.

There are thousands of memories of Fr. Phil that would take too long to mention. So in the end, I'll say, Fr. Phil, I love you. Thank you for being a great friend. You're in my prayers. May you Rest In Peace.

Father Phil had a big influence in my father's faith walk. I still have a photo of Dad with a bible in his hands reading a passage in the St Joseph Roanoke Indiana rectory to a group of people....it had HUGE impact on me as a youth. Fr. Phil was able to concelebrate both Mom and Dad's funeral masses. I ran into Fr.Phil again as an adult at St Mary's Soup Kitchen in Fort Wayne as we searched the masses during a Thanksgiving Day meal. Great man doing God's work! Thankful for the lessons.
