RICHARD INSKEEP Obituary

RICHARD G. INSKEEP, 89, of Fort Wayne, died on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at home. Born in Bluffton, Dick served as the President and Publisher of The Journal Gazette Company. During his tenure, he enhanced his locally owned newspaper and strengthened its position in the community. He also founded and served as President of The Journal Gazette Foundation. That Foundation has contributed over $10 million dollars to Northeast Indiana charities. His accomplishments are many but a few include: Induction into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame and The Junior Achievement Hall of Fame. He was awarded an honorary doctorate for service to Indiana University and received the United Way's Bill Latz Award. However, developing personal relationships was Dick's strength and his joy. He made friends wherever he went. Some of those friends were from the newspaper or the golf course or Lake Wawasee all places he loved. He enjoyed German Shepherds, and as a late night snack - ice cream and fried egg sandwiches. Dick would travel reluctantly and then be glad he went. And despite their record, he was always happy watching a Chicago Cubs or an Indiana University game. Some of Dick's favorite volunteer activities included the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Board of Trustees, President and Tournament Chairman of the Mad Anthonys golf tournament and National President of the IU Alumni Club. First Presbyterian was his church home. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Harriett; daughter Julie Inskeep (Bobby Simpson) of Fort Wayne; sons, Joseph (Barbara) Inskeep of Cambridge, Mass., Thomas Inskeep of Deerfield Beach, Fla. and Stephen (Leslie) Inskeep of Atlanta Ga.; six grandchildren, Leigha, Laura, Claire, Kirk, Leo, and Jack; and great granddaughter, Matilda. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thelma and Glenn Inskeep; sister, Carolyn Inskeep; and brother, Robert Inskeep. (All formerly of Bluffton). Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road. Memorials may be made to Turnstone or the Indiana University Foundation. To sign the online guestbook, please visit www.domccombandsons.com

When Dick Inskeep hired me in 1962, I rushed home to tell my mother that "the most handsome and charming man I ever met" had just made my dreams of working for The Journal Gazette come true. It was my distinct joy and honor to work for Dick for 40 years. He was caring, warm, wonderfully witty, passionate about his newspaper and the community, devoted to Harriett and his family, and fiercely loyal. I will forever cherish the memories and forever be grateful the handsome man with the gentle smile made my dreams come true.

Please know that I am and will pray daily for your family for healing of your broken hearts. I also hope that wonderful memories of Dick will surround you like warm hugs from Heaven.
I feel blessed to have been mentored by Dick and Harriet in the real meaning of servant leadership and civic responsibility. I dearly love both of the Inskeeps and will miss Dick very, very much.

Dear Harriett and family, My sincere sympathy to you all as you say farewell to your wonderful husband, father, grandfather and best friend. You will be in my thoughts and prayers in the days and week ahead. The article in the paper and the well-chosen words of the obituary certainly captured well the man Dick was and how he was known to so many. Friendly and enjoying people says it all!
