Saundra Baxter Obituary
Sandy was born on July 11, 1941, in Huntington, IN, to the late Fred VanMeter and Helen (Shattoo) VanMeter. She married Rex Baxter February 15, 1963, he passed away February 16, 2016.
Sandy graduated from Huntington Township School in 1959. Her and her husband Rex owned Baxter's Restaurant for 30 years. She was a member of Markle Church of Christ, and she attended adult classes there. Sandy was also a former member of Red Hatter's.
Sandy is survived by many nieces and nephews, and her best friend Sharon Betz.
Along with her parents, and husband she was preceded in death by six brothers; Richard, Melvin, Robert, Erv, Ed and Freddie Van Meter and six sisters; Betty Wolfe, Mae Gawthrop, Maxine Smith, Goldie Cargar, Dorothy Woster and Pauline Thompson.
Burial will be at Star of Hope Cemetery, Huntington, IN.
Preferred Memorials are to United with Love Food Pantry in care of McElhaney Funeral Home 715 N. Jefferson St. Huntington, IN 46750.
Service 4:00 pm Friday October 17, 2025 with calling prior from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm all at McElhaney Funeral Home 715 N. Jefferson St. Huntington, IN 46750

Sandy and I came to Huntington Township the same year and remained close friends throughout high school and occasionally kept in touch thereafter! IF my memories serves me accurately, I talked with her on the phone in the past year. Sweet memories. Someday I will get to join her! All is well with my soul.

Sandy was a wonderful lady and a great boss when I worked for her at Baxter´s restaurant many years ago. Great memories! She and Rex were long time friends of my family and she will be fondly remembered

Our family knew Rex and Sandy for many years, through the Baxter's restaurant they owned, to our love and sharing of Yorkies, and visits throughout. Later, I kept in touch through our church, Markle Church of Christ. My late husband died just 1 year before Rex, and knew him from school many years ago. Beautiful couple, beautiful lady.
