Walter Friend Obituary

Walter Clarence Friend, 77, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed away suddenly June 24, 2024, he was born Nov. 28, 1946 in Defiance, OH. Walt was a social butterfly in all aspects of life. He was extremely quick-witted, selfless, and caring. He loved cards, especially Hearts and Euchre, and was getting back into golfing with friends. He was a member at Legion 409 and Legion 47, where his infectious laugh could light up the room. He often helped at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church where he had been a member for years. Walter loved to spend time with family and friends by cooking, laughing, and drinking good red wine. Nothing made him happier than entertaining with family, friends, and his grandchildren. His favorite holiday was April 1st when he could outwit his grandchildren, who love to reflect on all of those memorable pranks. While in the Army, Walt was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He worked for Norfolk Southern for over 30 years. Walter is survived by his stepson, Mathew Novak; daughter Nicole (Cory) Setser; three grandchildren, Katlyn (Christian Geenan), Donovin, Reid; and his two sisters Shirley and Connie. He was preceded in death by his wife, June; parents Clarence and Josephine; and his sister Barbara. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 20th at 12:00 with visitation times between 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church at 4700 Vance Ave., Fort Wayne, IN 46815. Walt generously donated his body to the Anatomical Education Program at Indiana University School of Medicine (as did his wife June). Donations in Walter's memory can be made to the Anatomical Education Program, 635 Barnhill Drive, Room MS 304, Indianapolis, IN 46202; or Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 4700 Vance Ave., Fort Wayne, IN 46815.

We were so blessed to know June and Walt through our relatives from the Feber family. Enjoyed them on some trips we took together. They were a great couple and we are glad they rejoice now together in eternity.

Walter and I served together as Army buddies while we were stationed in Erlangen, Germany. During those many months, we became lifelong friends and we chose him to be God father to one of my children. After service, we remained close and my late wife, Marilyn, and I spent time visiting at their home in Ft Wayne and got together several times in Florida. June and Walt were very special friends and will be forever missed. My sincere condolences to Nichole and family, Matt, and his entire family. He will be missed, but will live in our hearts forever.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I had the pleasure of knowing Walt and June through their attendance at Parkview YMCA for a number of years. The Silver Sneakers classes they attended were always entertained with their seasonal costumes and amazing sense of humor. They enjoyed life and dearly loved each other...made for each other and now reunited for eternity. Thanks for those fond memories Walt & June, two very unique people who found each other and blessed many with their presence.... you are missed! !!
