Edward Chase Obituary

Edward S. Chase Jr.

Exeter - Edward S. Chase Jr., a long-term resident of Exeter, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2014 at the Exeter Hospital.

He will be greatly missed by his loving son, Edward W. Chase, daughter-in-law, Susan Chase, and grandson, Riley B. Chase. He was the husband of the late Katherine Covert Chase, and father of the late Arthur Chase who died on May 22, 2013. He is also survived by his niece, Susan Rose and husband Eric Rowe, and nephew, John Helie, and many extended family members.

He will also be missed by the residents of Riverwoods at Exeter, members of the Exeter Historical Society, and the community of Exeter in general. Edward was born in Exeter in July of 1921. His father, Edward S. Chase II, was the first rural letter carrier in the town of Exeter. Drafted in 1942, Edward was assigned to the Army Special Education Program, where he studied Moroccan Arabic. He was sent to Cairo, Egypt and spent time there and in Abadan, Iran as a cryptographer, during World War II. After the War, Edward graduated from Yale and received his doctorate at Oxford.

He formerly worked for the National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency, committing 22 years of service to the United States. He traveled extensively during this time, living in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

Once retired he bought the same house he grew up in on Grove Street in Exeter. He joined the Exeter Historical Society and served as President there for 15 years. He was a consummate chef, and made many outstanding and interesting meals for friends, community members and relatives.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 11-1 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter, N.H. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by a reception at the Great Bay Room at Riverwoods at Exeter, 7 Riverwoods Drive, Exeter, N.H. Burial will be in the Brentwood Cemetery, NH at a later date.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made in his memory to the Exeter Historical Society, PO Box 924, Exeter, NH 03833 or the Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.

Ed will be sorely missed by the Exeter Historical Society staff. Though we had, understandably, seen less of him in recent years, he always added to the conversation. I never failed to learn something new when Ed was around!
