Thomas Pawnell Obituary

NEWMARKET - Thomas F. Pawnell, 68, of 153 Exeter Road, Newmarket, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 6, 2015.

He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will be missed dearly.

He was born in Exeter on Feb. 22, 1946, the son of Francis and Emily Pawnell of Dover. Raised in Dover, later he and his wife, Maureen, built a home on Tom's grandparent's property, the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas E. Starr of 153 Exeter Road, Newmarket, in the fall of 1989.

He graduated from Dover High School class of 1965 on a Sunday and started working the following day at the then-Kidder press on Broadway in Dover. After 23 years, he went to work at Spaulding Composites located in Gonic, N.H.

For the last 10 years he has worked for Symmetry Medical Company, located in Manchester. Tom also worked part-time in the Sears auto department at the Fox Run Mall, retiring after 14 years in the spring of 2007

In October of 1965, Tom joined Battery "B" of the New Hampshire Army National Guard Field Artillery, located on Oak Street in Dover. After five years and after attaining the rank of sergeant, he attended the New Hampshire Military Academy's Officer Candidate School.

In July of 1972 he graduated as a Second Lieutenant and was assigned to the Battalion Headquarters in Portsmouth. During his military career Tom commanded Battery "A" 197th Field Artillery Group, located on Brock Street in Rochester.

He was also fortunate enough to return and command Battery "B" in Dover. In between commands and up until his retirement, he held staff positions at the Battalion headquarters in Portsmouth and staff positions at the Brigade Headquarters in Manchester. He retired after 23 years of service at the rank of Major. He was a member of The American Legion Post 67 in Newmarket.

As a young man he was a helper in some of the Dover Youth programs. He refereed Pee Wee football.

Once in Newmarket he helped with the basketball and baseball youth programs. He also helped in the Boy Scouts both at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Dover, where he served as committee chairman, plus he helped with the Newmarket troop.

Tom's greatest love besides his wife and sons, was the love of his grandchildren. He always had a smile on his face, plus a camera close at hand.

Family members include his beloved wife and soul mate for the last 30-plus years, Maureen of Newmarket; his four sons, Thomas Mark Pawnell and his wife, Lisa, of Rochester, Timothy Pawnell and his wife, Christina, of Rochester, Zachary Pawnell of Newmarket, and Joshua Pawnell and his fiancé, Sierra Costanza, both of Raymond. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Gabrial, Jackson and Amelia, children of Timothy and Christina Pawnell; Callie and Hunter, children of Zachary Pawnell; and Natalia and soon-to-be-born Emily Elizabeth, children of Joshua Pawnell and fiance Sierra Costanzo.

He was preceded by his father, Francis James Pawnell; mother, Emily (Starr) Pawnell; sister, Pamela Pawnell of Dover; and grandparents Thomas and Edna Starr of Newmarket.

SERVICES: A Visiting hour will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 13, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. Burial will be at the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket. Casual attire is suggested.

Maureen, Zach, and Josh - I am so glad I got to know Tom well through coaching basbetball and baseball in Newmarket. He was great with the kids, and the first to offer if anything needed doing. Great memories. Whenever I was in the mall I would make a special trip to Sears Automotive to say a quick hi and he always had a smile on his face. He will be missed.

Sincere sympathy to Tom's family on the loss of a great person. As young children, Tommy and I took tap dance and baton lessons and he was a good sport. We graduated in 1965 but lost track through the years. Seems like he had a good life. So sorry for your loss.
