Yee-Chun Kuo Obituary

DURHAM - Yee-Chun Helen Kuo, 81, formerly of Durham, N.H., died Monday, June 25, 2012, in San Bruno, Calif.

Mrs. Kuo (nee Yee-Chun Lee) was born in Hong Kong in 1930. She was the youngest child of Har-Wing and Shuk-Lin Lee. She was married for a time as a teenager, and has a son, Joe, and a daughter, Eva, from that marriage.

She attended Lingnan College in Hong Kong, then came to the United States, where she earned a Master of Education Administration from Boston College. It was while living in the greater Boston area that she met and married Shan Kuo.

She lived for a time in New Haven, Conn., where her son, Timothy, was born, then moved to Somerville, Mass., while her husband taught at Tufts University. The family moved to Durham in 1964 when her husband accepted a faculty position at the University of New Hampshire.

For many years, she was one of the librarians at Dover High School, and loved working with the students there (including chaperoning a trip to Germany). She later moved to Cambridge, Mass., where she taught in the Cambridge Public School System. After retiring, she moved to San Francisco to enjoy the company of her friends and to escape the New England winters.

She was throughout her life a devoted friend. Communicating became difficult as her health failed, but she cherished the close friendships she made throughout her life, including friendships from the war-years of her youth, from her years in Durham, and from her retirement years.

She is survived by three children: Joe Tam of Ontario, Canada, Eva Tan of Taipei, Taiwan, and Timothy Kuo of Sterling, Va. She is also survived by her sister Yee-Mui Yang, by her daughters-in-law Peggy Tam and Ann Kuo, by her son-in-law Tsung-Hui Ho, and by her grandchildren Debra, Jeffrey, Eugenia, Amy, and Brian.

A Memorial Service will be held for her on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. at The Church of Saint Thomas More, 6 Madbury Road, Durham, New Hampshire.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Thomas F. Fleming, S.J. Scholarship Fund, which she established to provide scholarship assistance to students at Boston College (Mailing address: Thomas F. Fleming, S.J. Scholarship Fund, Office of University Advancement, Cadigan Alumni Center, Boston College, 140 Commonwealth Ave, Chestnut Hill, Mass. 02467)

My condolences to the Kuo family. I met Mrs. Kuo when i first moved to Dover and started spending a lot of time in the library. She was so proud of "her library"

I fondly remember Mrs Kuo and her influence on my school years at DHS. She was always helpful and sometimes demanding but she kept the library running despite some of our antics during those years. I knew that I could always count on her to help me find a resource in the library. God Bless her and my sympathy to her family and friends around the world.

Just another student guided by Mrs. Kuo's gentle discipline wishing to express my condolences. Mrs. Kuo kept order in the DHS library, for it was her domain; we kids knew that and respected her for it. And it was her husband who at UNH taught me to understand calculus with his 'can o worm' analogy. Rest in peace, Mrs. Kuo.
