Mr. Anthony "Tony" E. Wolk, of Frederick, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at his home after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ida Blackburn Wolk of Frederick.
Born Nov. 11, 1930 in Whitney, Pa., he was the son of the late Anthony and Mary Wolk of Norvelt, Pa.; brother, Joseph Wolk and wife, Vee of Norvelt, Pa.; sisters, Florence Rollins and of Virginia Beach, Va. and Marian and husband, Don Myslewski of North Huntingdon, Pa.; sons, Timothy Wolk and wife, Mary Jo of Reston, Va., John Wolk and wife, Donna of Phoenix; and grandchildren, Matthew Wolk, Allison Wolk, Emma Wolk, John Wolk Jr., and Michael Wolk. He is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Albert Rollins.
Anthony was member of the Hurst High School of Norvelt, Pa. baseball and basketball teams. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948-1952 as a staff sergeant during the Korean War and was assigned to the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa in which he received an Airman of the Month Award. After receiving an honorable discharge, he enrolled at The Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1956 with a bachelor's in aeronautical engineering.
During the Cold War era, he worked as a design engineer for the Martin Aircraft in Baltimore and Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown companies from 1956-1960 and then as research development engineer for missile technology at U.S. Army at Fort Detrick from 1960-1970 where he received a Engineering Achievement award from the Scientific Research Society of America. Retiring in 1989, as a mechanical engineer with the Food & Drug Administration in Rockville, Anthony completed 32 years of U.S. Government service. Upon retirement, he worked as a pharmaceutical and biomedical industry consultant.
Tony was a loving husband and father. He was an avid baseball and Penn State football fan. He served as a Boy Scout leader, Church League basketball coach and Little League Baseball Coach to include coaching the Clover Hill team that won the 1974 Frederick County Junior League Championship. He was a member of the Frederick Elks, Catoctin Club and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, from Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second St., Frederick. Rev. Keith W. Boisvert, pastor of St. Katharine Drexel, will officiate. Interment will be held at noon Friday, May 16, in the Stahlstown Cemetery, in Stahlstown, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorial donations be made in the memory of Anthony Edward Wolk to Penn State, College of Engineering, 101 Hammond Bldg, University Park, PA 16802.
