Betty Hargett Obituary
Mrs. Betty Pearl Tobery "Nanny" Hargett, 74, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
She was the wife of Luther F. Shorty Hargett. They were married for 54 years.
Born Oct. 19, 1929, in Frederick, she was a daughter of the late Russell William and Claudia Lee Sier Tobery.
She was a licensed babysitter from 1949 to 1977. She worked for Frederick County Public Schools as a special education bus aide until her retirement in 1991.
She thoroughly enjoyed children and provided childcare for several decades. She enjoyed her family, community, fellowship and flowers.
She was a member of the Jefferson United Church of Christ, Jefferson Volunteer Fire Co. Auxilary, and volunteered many hours to the Jefferson Ruritan Club.
Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons, Luther F. Hargett Jr. and wife Pat of Boonsboro, Robert S. Hargett and wife Brenda of Hagerstown, and Paul W. Hargett of Middletown, and Byron Hargett of Frederick; two daughters, Betty L. Hargett of Middletown, and Bonnie Setters of Jefferson; nine grandchildren, Heather Delauter and husband Matthew of Smithsburg, Corey Hargett and wife Lara of Hagerstown, Carrie, Brandy and Mandy Hargett, all of Hagerstown, Amy Hargett of Martinsburg, W.Va., Jamile Wiles and husband Phillip of Hagerstown, Ty Hargett of Middletown, and Chloe Setters of Jefferson; and three great-granddaughters; three sisters, Lou Wheeldon and husband John, and Doris Rice, all of Frederick, and Barbara Whipp and husband Kenneth of Towanda, Pa.; five brothers, Russell Tobery, Norman Tobery and wife Hazel, Bernard Tobery, Thomas Tobery and wife Judy, and Melvin Tobery and wife Charlotte, all of Frederick; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Sandy Tobery of Jefferson.
She will also be remembered by son Bryon's friend, Shari Fogle; and son Paul's friend, Judy Wright.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at Jefferson United Church of Christ, with calling one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Guy A. Wenck, pastor, will officiate.
Interment will be in the church cemetery, Jefferson.
Bearers will be Kenneth Whipp Jr., Gary Wheeldon, J.R. Arnold, Donald Corun, Mike Summers and Marshall Wisner. Honorary bearers will be Henry Lakin Jr., Charles Smith, Dan Poole and Bernard Remsburg.
