Charles Saunders Obituary

Charles Milton Saunders, 87, of Cape May, N.J., and formerly of Avalon and E. Lansdowne, PA, passed away on February 3, 2012. Born in Philadelphia, Charles was a 1942 graduate of West Catholic High School. A proud World War ll veteran, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sumter in the South Pacific Theater where he witnessed the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. Charles was employed by the A&P grocery chain for thirty years but the job he most loved came after retirement. Mr. Saunders devoted twenty-five years as a volunteer aide at Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Cape May, giving love and counsel to hundreds of students. Charles was predeceased by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Myrtle (nee Foley) in 2008. Always a supportive and attentive father and grandfather, he is survived by five children, Charles (and Diane) Saunders, Michael (and Eleanore) Saunders, Kim (and James) Moore, Paul (and Sheila) Saunders and Dianne Saunders; nine grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Mary Ann, Molly, Marjorie Saunders, Nathan, Ryan, Rebecca and Michael Hand. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday (Feb. 11th) at 11a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 525 Washington St., Cape May where there will be a viewing from 10am until 10:50am. Interment will follow in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in Charlie's memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266, online at pancan.org or to Cape Regional Medical Center Foundation, 2 Stone Harbor Blvd., Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.
