Charlotte Writer Obituary

Charlotte Agnes Writer, of Woodsboro, MD, passed away peacefully at Frederick Health Hospital on Sunday, February 2, 2025, with her son and daughter at her side. She was 94 years old.

Charlotte was born and raised in Richmond Hill, NY, and later moved to Elmont, NY, where she lived for over 50 years. After the death of her beloved husband, Donald, in 2012, Charlotte moved to Frederick in 2013 to be closer to family.

She was a devoted homemaker and held several part-time jobs throughout her life. She later worked full-time for Nassau County as an executive secretary in the data processing division. After more than 25 years of dedicated service, she retired in the late 1990s.

In her retirement, Charlotte and Donald enjoyed traveling across the United States by car, taking cruises, and visiting their grandchildren in Maryland. When not traveling, they enjoyed going to movies and Broadway shows. Charlotte loved being with and cooking for her family. She loved ice cream almost as much!

In recent years, she struggled with dementia and was a resident of Somerford Place and House in Frederick. Her family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Somerford and Right-at-Home for the loving care they provided.

Charlotte is survived by her children, James Writer (Susan) and Karen DiMartino (Joseph); her grandchildren, Kathleen Writer (Matt Kicinski), Helen Ezell (Quentin), and James Writer (Alyssa); and her great-grandchildren, Koa and Kaia. She was predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Helen DiGiovanna, and her husband, Donald.

A visitation will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, MD, on Monday, February 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Interment will take place at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Daybreak Adult Day Services, 7819 Rocky Springs Rd., Frederick, MD 21702.

Charlotte Writer and I became good friends when she came to work for Nassau County and I was already working there. It was a lovely friendship. I hadn't been in touch with her for a few years and learned that she passed away just today when I unexpectedly saw her obituary. I often thought about her and wondered how she was doing. We worked in the same department when computers were becoming important. We lived in close neighborhoods, Charlotte in Elmont and I in Valley Stream. I have often thought about her and feel very sorry that I didn't stay closer. Eventually I moved to North Carolina and Charlotte moved to Maryland. As we got older it wasn't easy to visit but we spoke on the phone and kept in touch that way.
God bless her. Alice Ashman

In the more than 44 years I was blessed to know this incredible lady (for that is without doubt what she was), she was never anything but kind and supportive. She was truly one of a kind.
