Clare Lindner Obituary
Sister Clare Lindner DC, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, of congestive heart failure.
Born in Cumberland, Sister Clare was the daughter of the late John and Teresa Lehman Lindner.
Sister Clare entered the Daughters of Charity in 1937, and pronounced her vows in 1942. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg in 1953, and a master's in business administration from George Washington University in Washington, in 1971.
Sister Clare also attended the University of Detroit. She was a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators, American Hospital Association, and American College of Nursing Home Administrations.
Sister Clare began her 63-year career as a Daughter of Charity in 1939 at Mount Hope Retreat in Baltimore, followed by one year (1941-1942) at U.S. Soldiers Home in Washington, and a return to Mount Hope Retreat (1942-1944), supervising patient care.
Her next assignment (1944-1948) was as nurse supervisor at St. Joseph's Retreat in Dearborn, Mich. and a year at St. Vincent's Hospital, Bridgeport, Conn. She was then appointed the school nursing director of St. Vincent Hospital in Philadelphia. In 1955 Sister Clare was missioned to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore where she was a nurse instructor until 1957.
She was the assistant director of nursing at Providence Hospital in Detroit from 1958-1960; director of nursing at Jenkins Memorial Home and returned to St. Vincent's Hospital, Bridgeport, in 1962, as director of nursing. Sister Clare also served as consultant at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland and Marian Retreat House in Baltimore.
From 1968 to 1971 she served as school nurse at Immaculate Conception Academy, Washington, and Elizabeth Seton High School, Bladensburg.
Sister Clare was assistant administrator of St. Joseph's Provincial House in Emmitsburg for three years and assistant administrator for 12 years at St. Agnes Hospital (1975-1987). Her last active duty assignment was at Providence Hospital in Washington where she worked in the purchasing department until 1997.
Surviving are four sisters, Sister Mary Florence Lindner, DC, Emmitsburg; Sister Regina Lindner, DC, Emmitsburg; Sister Mary John Lindner, DC, Bridgeton, Mo.; and Loretta Lippold, Cumberland; one brother, Philip Lindner, Cumberland; numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Sister Madeleine Lindner, DC, Marie Yockus; and three brothers, James, Michael and John Lindner.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Emmitsburg.
