George Black Obituary

Mr. George Webster "Web" Black, 78, of 9016 Bethel Road, Frederick, died Monday, Dec. 27, at Glade Valley Nursing Center, Walkersville.

He was the husband of the late Hilda Slifer Black.

Born Feb. 22, 1921, near Unionville, he was a son of the late Charles Vernon and Marian Augusta Bart Black.

Mr. Black was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He had retired from Fort Detrick where he had worked in the maintenance department from 1952 until 1970. In 1970 he opened his own business on Montevue Lane, GW Black Auto repair. After he retired again in 1986 he was associated for seven years with Marjon-Hertz, as a driver.

He was a member of Glade Valley Church of the Brethren and served on the church board. For many years he sang on the choir of Frederick Church of the Brethren.

He was a member of the Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11, and a former member of the Civitan Club.

Mr. Black was an avid gardener, loved to cut grass and was a sports fan.

He is survived by one son, Dennis L. Hoffman and wife Lorraine of Thurmont; one grandson, Daniel A. Hoffman and wife Karen of Middletown; two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Chase Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.

He will be remembered by many loving neighbors and friends, including Jane Young of Frederick.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret E. Krantz; and four brothers, Sterling, Sherman, Gordon and Chester Black.

Friends may call Wednesday, Dec. 29, from 3 to 9 p.m., at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. in the Glade Valley Church of the Brethren, 2 Chapel Place, Walkersville. The Rev. Paula Bowser, pastor of the church will officiate.

Interment will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Glade Valley Church of the Brethren, 2 Chapel Place, P.O. Box 690, Walkersville, Md. 21793.
