G. Rhoderick Obituary

LCDR G. Carlton Rhoderick, USNR Ret., of Middletown, MD, 88, passed from this life on May 3, 2012, at Kline Hospice House, Mount Airy, MD, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Born November 9, 1923, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of late George C. and Olive Bowlus Rhoderick.

He graduated from Middletown High School in 1940 and attended the University of Maryland School of Engineering. In 1942, he joined the Naval Reserve and was sent for further training at Princeton University, Columbia University and North Carolina State University. He was stationed at Navy Pier in Chicago, IL, until he was deployed to the South Pacific Theatre, serving as an engineer officer and advancing to executive officer of the naval vessel USS LSM 340. Following his retirement from active duty, he served in the USNR for 22 years.

Following the war, he returned to Middletown where he went into business with his father publishing the Middletown Valley Register, the Thurmont Catoctin Enterprise and the Mount Airy Community Reporter until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of the Planning and Zoning Board of Middletown for 31 years, during that time serving as member, secretary and chairman. Upon stepping down from the board, he continued to serve the town as a planning and zoning consultant. Mr. Rhoderick was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Middletown Medical Center.

He was a faithful member of Evangelical Lutheran Church Zion where he served as Superintendent of the Sunday Church School, taught confirmation classes, was a loyal member of the choir and served as Director of Christian Education.

Mr. Rhoderick is survived by his wife of 62 years, Adrienne Ahalt Rhoderick; four children, Teresa R. Bowers and husband G. Ralph Bowers of Carlisle, PA, George C. (Jerry) Rhoderick and wife Nena Helmick Rhoderick and Jay E. Rhoderick and wife Angela Roberts Rhoderick, both of Middletown, and Traci R. Turner and husband Samuel Turner of Greensboro, NC.; eight grandchildren, Christian Bowers and wife Nicole of Alexandria, VA, Erin Bowers Rizk and husband Matthew of Doylestown, PA, Tamara Rhoderick of Middletown, MD, and Jody Rhoderick of Charleston, SC, Heather Rhoderick Dixon and husband Peter of Leesburg, VA, and Ashley Rhoderick of Chapel Hill, NC, Joshua and Alexander Turner of Greensboro, NC; and one great-grandson, Christian Colman (Cole) Bowers of Alexandria, VA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard. Carlton was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Behre of Middletown Medical Center and Dr. Boyd Dwyer of Frederick, the caregivers from Right at Home Care Agency, Frederick Memorial Hospital and Wound Center and the Kline Hospice House for their excellent care.

The family will receive friends at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown, on Monday, May 7, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 107 West Main Street, Middletown, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at the Middletown Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, MD or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
