Gertrude Monahan Obituary

Mrs. Gertrude V. Monahan, 84, of Frederick, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at Glade Valley Nursing Center, Walkersville. She was the wife of the late James E. Monahan, who died Aug. 21, 1991.

Born Aug. 21, 1924, in Prince George's County, she was the daughter of the late Edward F. and Rose E. Alvey. She was a 1938 graduate of St. James Catholic School in Mount Rainier and a 1942 graduate of Bladensburg High School. Gertrude was a registration clerk for Leland Memorial Hospital in Riverdale.

She was an avid Washington Redskins fan, enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles, and she never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune.

Surviving are six children, James T. Monahan and wife, Fritzi, of Cheverly, Michael P. Monahan and wife, Bunny, of Beaufort, S.C., Kevin A. Monahan and wife, Terri, of Conway, S.C., Julia A. Moseley and husband, Carl, of Mechanicsville, Mary K. Jenkins and husband, Drew, of Hillsborough, N.C., and Margaret R. Collins and husband, Mark, of Keedysville; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Monahan was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 2, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Additional services and inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Cheltenham Veteran's Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham.

Memorial contributions may be made to Frederick Memorial Hospital Interventional Cardiology Program, P.O. Box 1093, Frederick, MD 21702-9704. Indicate gifts are in memory of Mrs. Gertrude Monahan. Gifts may also be made online at FMH.org.
