John Nolte Obituary

John Edwin Nolte, 67, of Frederick, Maryland passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, with his caregiver at his side, in Frederick. He was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) in 2024.

Born in Washington, D.C. on March 22, 1958, John was the son of Carl Robert "Bob" Nolte and Winifred M. Nolte (Joyce). John was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Robert (Bob) Nolte. He is survived by his Brother Fred Nolte (Kathy) of Phoenix, AZ, two step-children, Sarah Brechbuehl of Gettysburg, PA and Katherine Keilholtz of Cascade, MD as well as four step-grandchildren, Maxwell, Allison, William, and Wade; along with several cousins, nephews and nieces. For the last few years of his journey, Jenni Nakamoto Callahan and a very special group of friends were by John's side, visiting and helping him regularly. He was especially fond of his caregiver Liz Brown of Rockville, MD.

John was raised in Maryland and attended Boonsboro High School, where he ran track, played football, and graduated in 1976.

John went to York College in Pennsylvania and received a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, graduating in 1980. After college, John joined the Frederick Police Department where he proudly served for 22 years retiring at the rank of Sergeant. During the course of his career, he served as a Patrol Officer, worked in the Staff Traffic Unit, was a patrol Sergeant and was a Sergeant in the Community Services Division taking part in numerous special events and details. During his time with FPD, he was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #91 where he held a Board position and served on the Bargaining Committee for many years.

After retiring as a Sergeant with FPD, John came back as a civilian, working at the Police Academy. Soon after that, John became a District Court Commissioner where he continued to serve the citizens of Frederick for ten more years. He enjoyed the continued interaction with members of the law enforcement community and remained close with many of his colleagues. He looked forward to his weekly "Old Guy Dinners" with his retired police friends. In his younger days he enjoyed running and playing golf. He was a passionate, lifelong fan of both the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens holding season tickets to the Ravens for many years. He also enjoyed attending Broadway Musicals and traveling to San Francisco.

Was so sorry to hear this sad news. I worked closely with John on the department back in the 80's. We've kept in touch through the years, but I'm sorry to say that more recently, our contacts had been fewer and further apart.

RIP Sgt. Nolte
