Larry Ecker Obituary

Larry Ecker, 71, of Thurmont, MD died Saturday, April 24, 2021 at his home where his wife and children were by his side.

Larry was born June 26th, 1949 in Frederick, Maryland, He was the youngest son of the late Merhle "Doc" Ecker and Grace Stull Ecker. His older brother, Doug, passed in 1992. He is survived by a son, Christopher and his wife, Brennan, and their two children, Casey and Olivia; a daughter, Erin Lawrence and her husband, Jason, and their children, Abby and Hannah. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary Fleming, and brother-in-law, Tom Fleming and his wife, Peggy, all of Mt. Airy, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

He married the love of his life, Donna (Fleming) Ecker, on February 23, 1973. They were married for 48 years. Larry spent those years showing his family, by example, the importance of patience, perseverance, self-improvement, humor, and simple conversation. To Larry, his most important roles were husband, father, and grandfather.

Larry was a lifelong resident of Thurmont and had an idyllic childhood surrounded by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Barkyard barbeques, trips to Lewisburg, PA, and afternoons at McGills swimming pool were staples of his youth. He was a 1967 graduate of Thurmont High School.

For 39 years, Larry was an HVAC mechanic at the National Cancer Research Center in Frederick. His interests included restoring old cars, American Flyer trains, old clocks, constantly improving his home, and spending time with his family, who he loved more than anything. Picking crabs and recklessly driving go-carts were two of his supreme skills, only known to those closest to him. Larry was a member of the Sons of American Legion Post 168 in Thurmont and Redmen #19 in Frederick.

Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Thurmont Little League, in Mr. Ecker's memory, PO BOX 361, Thurmont, MD 21788 or to Thurmont American Legion Auxiliary Post 168 Scholarship Fund, 8 Park Lane, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Rosie and I still miss Larry every day. We often find ourselves saying - boy I wish we could ask Larry about this. And we also often find ourselves laughing about funny things he did or stories he told. We also think about him every time we go by the Go-Kart track in Ocean City. We can still see him tearing around the track trying to give everyone a laugh as he tries to cut them off. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder - and we definitely couldn't be any more fond of the fact that we had him in our life. We are so happy that we can talk about him with dear Donna. Some days we still can't believe he is really gone. But he will stay in our hearts and memories forever.

Another year and my heart still aches. I'm sincere when I say not a day goes by when you don't cross my mind. The thought may start out in a sad way but always ends with a precious memory of you.

Donna, seeing Larry’s obituary saddened me greatly as he has been in my daily prayers since I last met you at the funeral for Lila B’s husband. One of the cruelest aspects of this pandemic is the inability to come together for a service to remember loved ones who have transitioned to eternal life. Please know that my prayers now will include you and your children as you mourn your beloved Larry.

I was sure lucky to have Larry as one of my cousins. I was a little older (6 years) but we lived across the street from each other growing up. He was more like a best friend and brother. I have many great memories of he and I and all our cousins growing up on Walnut Street. They were special times growing up in a small town.
In later years, we often spent hours on the phone talking about what it was like growing up in Thurmont, talking about old cars, his 55 Chevy and many other things.
My wife Rosie and I would so look forward to visits from Donna and Larry to the beach going to the local Legion, going out to eat, going to the car show, eating Thrasher french fries or just sitting around talking. When you are that close you don't have to be doing anything special, just being together is enough. We will miss him every day but we will keep his memory alive by continuing our conversations about memories with Donna and the rest of the family. Larry and Donna were a special couple. Love may change when someone passes on, but it never ends.

"Recklessly driving go-carts" very much so. He was a fun warm person. A great sense of humor and all around great human being. His wife, children and relatives will continue his legacy. We will strive to make the world a better place in his honor. Uncle Larry, you will be missed but never forgotten.

I worked with Larry for many years at the National Cancer Institute. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult and devastating life events a person will experience. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends. Larry was a wonderful human being who spent a lifetime dedicated to serving others.

Larry, Doug and I were very close growing up and continued that loving relationship into our adult years, raising our family. Our boys were the same age so we had lots of laughs with the kiddos. Our family trips to Ocean City were the best. Larry and I continued to be close as our loved ones passed. He Donna were so helpful to me when dad passed. They went out of there way to drive to Lewisburg to get me for the legion picnic when I was having some eye problems. Larry continued to keep in touch with the last sister of his dads and visited Aunt Audrie as often as possible.
Larry was my heart and I will miss his wit and loving heart until I meet up with him again.
