Larry Key Obituary

Larry Thomas Key, 68, of Frederick died suddenly on August 5, 2015. He was the son of John, and the late Mary Key of Urbana, MD. Larry graduated from Saint John's Literary Institute in 1965 and attended Frederick Community College. He was also a U.S. Navy Veteran. Larry is survived by his father John, daughters April and Melanie (Sean), his brothers, sisters and in-laws. He is also survived by his grandchildren Shawn, Cassidy, Donavon, Nathan and Nicholas. Preceded in death by his mother and three siblings, he also leaves behind many relatives and close friends.

A devoted runner, Larry was an active member of the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club. He developed many close friendships and "running buddies" in the running community. Not only was Larry an active participant running in races, he found great pleasure in volunteering as support personnel, offering water and encouraging runners to go the extra mile. Larry ran in marathons and races across the nation and was especially proud of having completed the JFK 50 miler and the Catoctin 50K.

Bringing attention to himself was not Larry's style. To honor his wishes, no formal services will be held. However, please feel free to stop by the Key Homestead for Family Day Sunday, to share memories of our beloved Larry, aka: My Daddy, Hon, Yunk, Granddaddy and Da.

Dear Key Family,
I met Larry 40 years ago at Fort Detrick. He was always sweet, loving and so happy to help anyone in need. It was a pleasure to see him at work and other places around the county. In 2004 he challenged me to run the first Salt Lake City Marathon with him, his sister and niece. Larry was probably the only person who believed I could do it. He told me how to train and encouraged me every day. He met me in SLC and made sure I was where I needed to be to start the Run. He finished way ahead of me, but there he was with his BIG smile, (and a banana), as I crossed the finish line. I will be forever grateful to him for his steadfast friendship, then and over the many years. The world is a better place because of Larry Key and his Family.

I knew Larry when I worked at NCI as a young adult. He left a mark on me, because he was so friendly and kind. He will be missed. A genuinely wonderful human being. Rest in peace my friend.

I knew Larry through work. What struck me about him was how well loved he was at NCI. Everyone knew Larry and he took the time every day to say hi, share a story or just flash you that kind smile of his as he passed in the hall. I'm not really sure how he got his work done because we all needed our time with Larry each and every day as he made his deliveries to the labs. When he retired we were sad for our loss yet happy for him. We knew this would afford him time to spend doing what he loved with his other family, the running community. When he entered marathons we rooted for him and when I'd pass him along a wooded trail in the Frederick watershed we'd stop and catch up as old friends would and it felt like little time had past since our last chance meeting. I'll miss you Larry and will always think of you when i hike and ride the trails of the Frederick watershed, specially "Key Highway" along the Blue trail. Take care my friend.

It was through April while working for the same company that I met her father. Then again, later, through my late husband Rick, by way of the Steeplechasers Running Club.

Larry will be greatly missed by all, and my heartfelt condolences go out to the entire family at this time.

May Larry run the halls of the Heaven with Rick.

God Bless.
