Leo Sperling Obituary

Dr. Leo Sperling, 84, of Frederick, died Saturday, April 14, at Beverly Health Care Center, Frederick.

He was the husband of Frances Sperling.

Born Jan. 27, 1917, in Poland, he was a son of the late Chaim and Bertha Klausner Sperling.

Dr. Sperling grew up in Berlin and was a survivor of the Holocaust. He immigrated to America in 1937.

He received a doctorate and worked as a clinical psychologist for the superintendent of schools in Bridgeport, Conn. He later worked as a psychologist for Dr. Waynick in Bridgeport. Upon retiring, the Sperlings moved to Frederick in 1986.

Dr. Sperling was active in the Crestwood Village community, participating in many groups and activities. He was a consumer affairs consultant chairman, a member of the computer club, an officer for the Great Decisions Program, and a contributor to the "Village Voice," the local newsletter for Crestwood Village. Together with his wife, he worked for the National Endowment for the Humanities.

He was a member of the American Psychological Association, an officer for the Beth Sholom social club, and a member of the National Organization of English as the Official Language.

Dr. Sperling had written many articles on history, politics and current events for The Frederick New-Post and The Washington Post.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Dr. Len Sperling and Dr. Marilyn Sperling, both of Potomac; four grandchildren, Rachel, Julie, Karen and Laura; and one brother, Julius Sperling of New York.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 16, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. Rabbi Morris Kosman of Beth Sholom Community Center, Frederick, will officiate.

Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, Owings Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beth Sholom Community Center, 1011 N. Market St., Frederick, Md. 21701; the American Kidney Fund Inc., 6110 Executive Blvd., Rockville, Md. 20852, or to the Hadassah.
