Michael Brooks Tippett, 86, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born September 1, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, Michael lived a life full of passion, dedication, faith and love.
After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1959, Michael and his wife, Judith, moved to Willoughby, OH, and then to Shaker Heights, settling in Ludlow, a community known for its commitment to diversity. Michael served as the president of the Ludlow Community Association where his involvement and leadership were instrumental in fostering a strong and supportive environment for all residents.
Michael taught chemistry at Mayfield High School and then became an assistant principal until 1979 when the family joined the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) full-time.
With the ICA, the Tippett family spent two years in Adelaide, Australia. Michael and Judith also worked in Lagos, Nigeria before eventually moving to the ICA headquarters in Chicago, IL. Back in Chicago, Michael returned to teaching chemistry at Lincoln Park High School and assistant principal.
In 1984, Michael's oldest daughter, Margaret (Meg), sustained a traumatic brain injury. Michael became her primary caregiver, along with wonderful nurses, for the next 38 years until her death in 2022. His dedication and love for his daughter exemplified his profound compassion and unwavering commitment to his family.
Upon retirement in 2000, Michael, Judith and Meg moved to Bradenton, Florida. Michael was active in his church, Manatee United Methodist, and also began substitute teaching in several area high schools.
After Judith's death, in 2021 Michael and Meg moved to Frederick, MD, where daughter, Kathryn (Kit) and her family reside. In Frederick, he continued to be active by singing in the choir at Frederick Presbyterian Church, volunteering with the church on projects for Habitat for Humanity, and ushering for local theater productions. His involvement in these activities reflected his enduring passion for community service and the arts.
Michael is survived by his children, Kathryn Tippett (James Lee) and Brooke Tippett Thompson (Keith Thompson), his grandchildren and their partners, Colin McPheeters (Cameron Lopez) and Lillian McPheeters (Ryan Hayes), who will remember him for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and his family meant the world to him.
Michael's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His spirit, wisdom, and kindness have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
