Patrick Magnier Obituary
The Rev. Patrick Alphonosus Magnier, C.S.sR., 90, who resided at 225 E. Church St., Frederick, died Monday, Nov. 26, at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore.
Born July 23, 1911, in Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland, he was a son of the late Michael J. and Elizabeth Karney Magnier.
The Rev. Magnier was professed in the Redemptorist Order on Sept. 8, 1930, and was ordained on Sept. 22, 1935. He obtained his master of sacred theology degree from St. Patrick's Seminary in Ireland.
The Rev. Magnier's service to the church began with missions in Ireland in 1935. In 1937, for six years, he began mission work in the Philippines. During World War II, he was imprisoned in a concentration camp by the Japanese. He was rescued by an American submarine and taken to Australia.
Since 1944, the Rev. Magnier has served numerous parishes and institutions. In New York, he had affiliations with Mount St. Alphonsus in Esopus, and St. Joseph Parish in Rochester.
In addition, he served in Boston with the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and as chaplain of the Joslin Diabetic Hospital; in Pittsburgh with St. Philomena Parish; in Washington, Holy Redeemer College; and in Baltimore with St. James, Sacred Heart, and Our Lady of Fatima Parishes, as well as with the St. Wenceslaus Residence. Prior to coming to Frederick, he served as chaplain at the Mount deSales Academy in Catonsville.
Lastly, he has served as chaplain of the Visitation Academy, East Second Street, Frederick, where he has been from 1994 until the present time.
Surviving are siblings, Elizabeth Barrett of County Cork, Nora MacNamee of Dublin, Ireland, and Clement Magnier of Sarasota, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Tom and Michael Magnier; and sisters Mary Flynn and twins Philomena and Ann Magnier.
Visitation will be held in the Chapel of the Visitation Academy, 200 E. Second St., Frederick, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the chapel. The Rev. Harry O'Meara, chaplain at Fort Meade, will celebrate the Mass.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Visitation Academy, 200 E. Second St., Frederick, Md. 21701.
