Robert Dixon Obituary

Robert L. "Buckwheat" Dixon, age 97, of Woodsboro, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, November 10, 2025, with his loving wife by his side.

A lifelong resident of Woodsboro, Buck was the son of the late Charles W. and Elizabeth M. Dixon. He was the devoted husband of Bonnie L. Holsinger Dixon for more than 66 years-together, they built a life centered on family, community, and shared joy.

Buck is survived by his daughter Susan (Kenny) Stitely and his son Steven (Mary) Dixon; four grandchildren-Megan (Ben), Jillian (Scott), Jordan (Jessica), and Sarah; and eight great-grandchildren (Graeme, Rory, Sloane, Aaliyah, Shay, Beau, Carson, Parker) who brought him endless pride. He was preceded in death by his siblings Charles A. Dixon and Dorothy Ramsburg.

A graduate of Walkersville High School, Class of 1946, Buck went on to serve as a corporal with the Army Air Corps for two years. He began his career at Cambridge Rubber Co. in Taneytown before joining the Woodsboro Post Office in 1956. What began as a clerk position soon led to his longtime service as Woodsboro Postmaster, a role from which he retired after 36 dedicated years.

Buck's commitment to community ran deep. He was a member of Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church, Glen W. Eyler American Legion Post 282, a life member of Union Bridge VFW and Frederick Elks, and an active member of the Damascus Travel Club. His love of sports-especially Notre Dame football and any baseball game-was matched only by the fond memories he carried of his youth playing and managing Woodsboro in the Maryland State League and participating in the Walkersville Tri-County League.

More than anything, Buck treasured time spent with his family-at gatherings filled with laughter, and on cherished summer and fall trips to the Outer Banks and Topsail Island. He loved traveling, playing golf, watching any sport on TV, classic movies, and listening to music.

When he wasn't telling a joke, he was surprising everyone with his remarkable singing voice-heard in church only when his favorite hymns made the cut.

And true to his spirited nature, Buck never missed a Happy Hour-especially when it meant being surrounded by the people he loved, his true secret to longevity.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, humor, and the joy he brought into every room, carrying with him a lifetime of stories, friendships, and unwavering love for his family.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15 at 12:00 p.m. at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro. Rev Dahl Drenning will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodsboro Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 27, Woodsboro, MD 21798.

I'll really miss talking to him when he went out to get the mail or was mowing the grass (twice a week in the spring). Have one for me best pal.

Dear Steve & Maryann and family, you have my sincere condolences. I know you have many good memories of Buckwheat, as he was quite a character. What a blessing to have so many years with him. Growing up, I heard lots of amusing stories that involved him, from my Uncle Charles Henry (& Aunt Betty) from the many years they were neighbors & all held key positions in Woodsboro. May they all rest in peace. Blessings.

Bonnie, Susan and Steve, what a wonderful person Buckwheat was. He always had something funny to say and without fail picked on me every time I went into the post office but to be trueful that carried on throughout my growing up. I can honestly say I have known him my entire life and it has been a true pleasure.

My prayers are with you Bonnie, Susan and Steve and your families.
