Roy Sigler Obituary

Roy William Sigler, Jr., 84, of Middletown, died peacefully on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Edenton Retirement Community. Born December 1, 1938, near Middletown, Roy was the son of the late Gladys Marie Sigler and Roy William Sigler, Sr. Roy was the husband of nearly 18 years to Carol Hargreaves Sigler, residing in Middletown. Mr. Sigler graduated from Middletown High School in 1956 where he starred as a multi-sport athlete before attending Frostburg State University. While at Frostburg he continued his athletic career, earning All-American status in soccer in 1961. Additionally, he compiled a 4 year match play record of 37-2 in golf, was undefeated for 3 years in the mile run in track, and played basketball for 4 seasons. He was the first inductee into the Frostburg State University Bobcat Hall of Fame and earned recognition as the greatest athlete in Frostburg State College History up to 1971. Additionally, he was inducted into the Frederick County Soccer Hall of Fame in 2016, as well as being inducted into the YMCA of Frederick County's Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of Fame. In 1963, Roy began his coaching career at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he served as the head soccer coach. After two years at Bates, he spent a year coaching soccer and assisting with several other sports at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. In 1966, Boston University hired Roy as the head soccer and golf coach, and assistant basketball coach. In 1974, after seven years leading the soccer program and producing several All-American players (including Middletown-native David Throne), he became head basketball coach at BU. He coached the Terriers basketball team for four seasons, mentoring multiple NBA players (including Frederick-native Ken Boyd). In addition to a storied career in athletics, both as an athlete at Frostburg and a coach at Boston University, Roy worked as a teacher in Frederick County for two years before selling life insurance. Later he worked for many years for Frederick Motor Company, as well as working as a greens keeper for Richland Golf Course. But he was perhaps best known locally for his part-time job as a radio color analyst for the Mount St. Mary's men's basketball team. Known affectionately as "The Mouth of the Mount", Roy began working for Mount St. Mary's during the 1988-89 season. He continued working radio broadcasts for The Mount for some 25 seasons where he combined his knowledge and passion for the game of basketball to bring enthusiasm and energy to each and every game he called, often standing up and waving his hands to get the crowd more involved. In his later years Roy enjoyed golfing, walking, fishing and watching sports, but he especially looked forward to he and Carol's annual golf trip to The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA. He also enjoyed attending local Middletown High School games and enthusiastically volunteering countless hours in support of the Middletown Girls Basketball program. Besides his wife, Carol, and their dog Misty, Roy is survived by his sister, Dorothy Harshman and husband Gene of Houston, TX; his son Bill Sigler and wife Lauren of Aldie, VA, along with grandchildren Lily and Imogene; his daughter Heather Hyde Minor of Chicago, Illinois; step-children Kim Poole of Ocean City, John Hargreaves of Middletown and Eddie Hargreaves and wife Melissa of Smithsburg, along with numerous step-grandchildren and one step-great granddaughter. The family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff at Edenton Retirement Community for their incredible support of "Coach" Sigler over the past three months. At this time there are no services planned. Arrangements entrusted to Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, Middletown, MD. I knew Coach Sigler from when he taught in the Frederick County Public Schools. He was kind, fair, and supportive. He always encouraged us to do our best and acknowledged our triumphs, regardless of how small. May his friends and family take comfort in their good memories of him.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Roy, who I only met ever so briefly in my life as "Muggs".
But my brief encounter with Muggs was a moment I share with many folks as he somehow saw something in me that ended up making a big impact on my first year at Univ of MD, and my life in general. I had just graduated from Middletown High School where I had played soccer, basketball, baseball, but had never met Muggs until out of the blue he invited me to help him with a soccer clinic for the young boys at the high school Summer of 1966. After the last day of the clinic he pulled me aside and said he heard I was going to UM in the Fall and asked if I was going out for the soccer team. I told him "no" as I was just a piddling 18 year old kid from a tiny town in Maryland and UM was loaded with fancy footed scholarship dudes from all over the world, what chance could I possibly have? He said he knew the coach of the freshman team (that was last year when freshmen couldn´t play varsity) and that if I just go out for the team and hustle my butt off like he knew I could, I had a shot. Well, I went to Summer orientation, found the folks I needed to connect with to see where/when tryouts were being held. OMG, I tried out and was a starter on that year´s freshman team along with a great bunch of guys, yes, many from other countries, hot shots from New York, etc. We went undefeated even kicked Navy´s butt in Annapolis! Thrill of a lifetime! After the game, we were invited to have dinner in the Navy mess hall. It was a hoot! Navy Plebes were running around waiting on us hand and foot. Just jokingly, one of my teammates, Paul Stiehl, said "man I sure would like some ice cream!" By golly a handfull of Plebes went scrambling to fetch us all some ice cream. What a wonderful bunch of Navy dudes, some of which maybe went on to help us Marines in Vietnam. Well I ended up dropping out of school (long story) and didn´t get to continue on with that gang which went on to be NCAA champs in 1968. But I did have the luck to become great friends with one of my NYC teammates, Paul Stiehl, who went on after his college days to become super involved in USA soccer, was the dude selected to be the director from USA for the 1994 World Cup. Anyway, I ramble on, it´s my way, main thing is that like others have noted about Roy, he had a great way of encouraging youngings to pursue great things, even if they didn´t have clue themselves of their abilities and character. I'm attaching a photo with me (center) and Paul Stiehl (left) and Ali Kadaster (hot shot from Turkey) after a soccer game Fall of '66. I was thinking of you that day and every day since. Thanks Muggs, rest in peace my hero!

I caddied and played golf at the VFW in the very late 50´s and early 60´s I was in awe of Roy who at the time was in his early 20´s and a fine golfer. I tried to copy his swing. He, Wayne Rhoderick, Earl Rhoderick, Nook Rhoderick, Dave Weinberg were all great golfers of that era not to mention all were absolute gentleman as well.

Oh, my gosh, Roy, I can't believe you are gone. So many memories from when you and I were in the same Franklin Life Insurance Office...you as an agent and me as the Office Manager. I remember when you got that fancy sports car and took me for a wild ride in it. You were trying to find a career to handle your visions issues, and you lost your contact lens one day in your office, and I was crawling all around very carefully on the carpet, and found it for you. Just so many memories of those days. You and your wife at the time, gifted me with a lovely winter coat at the party the office gave me when I left Frederick to move to Virginia in 1983. You had a very good life, albeit your vision issues. You dealt with each set back like the champion you always were. My deepest condolence to your family. Your life was well lived and the memories will sustain your loved ones.

Dear Carol,
Sending my condolences to you upon the loss of your husband, Roy. I had no idea the two of you have shared many happy years together. I personally did not know Roy, except he did sell me a car many years ago from Frederick Motor Company. I still recall how kind he was. I heard his name over the years mentioned in many sporting conversations. I became Dr. Sorrows' secretary when you resigned from NIST (NBS) back in the late 70's. Perhaps you remember me.
Blessings to you and your family,
Treva Siedling
