Steven Smith Obituary

Steven Montgomery Smith passed away June 8, 2013 at age 56 in Westminster, Maryland surrounded by family members. At the time of death, Steve was in hospice care at Golden Living Center due to an aggressive cancer that he had battled for the last year.

Steve was born in Laurel, Maryland on March 19, 1957 to Rev. Donald Montgomery Smith and Elizabeth Ferguson Smith.

He is survived by his daughters Madeline and Abbey Smith and his former wife, Dr. Kathleen York-Jordan. He was a wonderful brother and brother-in-law to: Stephanie [Smith] and Bill Price, Susan [Smith] and Jay Belt and Sherrie [Smith] and Rodney Harrison and spent his youth in various regions of Maryland: Laurel, University Park, Edgewater and then Mt. Airy.

In Mt. Airy, he worked at a dairy farm and played football and soccer at South Carroll High School. He was also involved in church and Young Life. He worked at Carroll County General Hospital and also attended University of Maryland for a period of time but left in order to obtain training to become a respiratory therapist in Arizona.

Steve loved the field of medicine and was an extremely compassionate caregiver who on more than one occasion administered CPR to people in need. He was a licensed Respiratory Therapist and in his twenties he went to Saudi Arabia to work in a hospital for 1.5 years. When he returned, he worked in various hospitals and eventually got married and had his precious daughters, Madeline and Abbey and finished his bachelors degree at UMBC. He then completed two years of medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. He worked as a Respiratory Therapist for many years in the Baltimore area. Steve was very proud of his daughters and was actively involved in their lives. In his later life, he was a volunteer caregiver and spent time visiting with elderly shut-ins and they all loved him.

Steve donated his body to further medical research to the Anatomy Gifts Registry (800-300-5433). This benefits scientific research and medical education.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 22 at Crosswind Church, 640 Lucabaugh Mill Road, Westminster, Maryland with the reverend Dave Sulcer officiating. Visitation will start at 10am on the same day.
