Buford Powers

Buford Powers, 78, of Ruther Glen died Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at his residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Powers was born April 27, 1931, in Toms Creek to the late Estel and Eliza Powers.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother and friend to many.

He is survived by a large family who loved and adored him. The world is a better place because he was here.

He will be missed dearly by his wife of 55 years, Patsy, and his five children, their spouses and their families.

In addition to his wife, his survivors include four daughters, Barbara Collins and her husband, Ricky, and their sons, Chris and Alex and his wife, Anna, Pam Cannon and her husband, Dennis, and their sons, Michael and his wife, Jenelle, and Robert, Terri Robinson and her husband, Dennis, and daughter Tracey and her husband, Mikie, and Rhonda Meade and her husband, Jeff, and their sons, Joshua and Brandon; and one son, Connie Ray Powers and his wife, Debbie, and their sons, Matthew, Nathan and David. He is also survived by two brothers and six sisters.

Mr. Powers loved and was loved by his great-grandchildren, Mikaela "Babydoll" and Jerahmai Cannon, and the upcoming baby of his granddaughter Tracey who is expected to arrive in January.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Hewitt, and a son-in-law, Steve Mullins.

A service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel, 1310 Courthouse Road, with the Rev. Lester Horton officiating.

Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, on a beautiful hilltop in Castlewood with the Rev. Leon Meade officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 5012 Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407.
