Craig Emerson Obituary

Craig Emerson

July 1, 1941 - January 1, 2025

Craig C. Emerson, 83, of Spotsylvania County, passed away on January 1, 2025, after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his father, Easley Emerson; his mother, Sarah Johnson Emerson; an older brother, Woody Emerson all of North Carolina; and a sister, Valerie of Montpelier. Craig is survived by his wife and best buddy of over 60 years, Clauda Kathleen McKinney Emerson; their three sons Christopher Emerson of Stafford, Clifford Emerson (Ingrid) of Winchester, and Clinton Emerson (Helen) of Powhatan; his grandson, Marshall Emerson; granddaughter, Alexandra Emerson; younger brother, Brion Emerson of Climax, NC; and three nieces and a nephew, all of whom he was justifiably proud, Tonjua Lohnes, Paige Shanklin, Dusti Power, and Daniel Emerson.

Craig graduated from Pleasant Garden High School (NC) and served in the Navy in the submarine service. He was a life member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans Association and was a member of their Holland Club. He spent a 32-year career as an electronics specialist and manager with the FBI in WDC and Quantico. Afterwards, he served for 20 years as a private consultant and trainer for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. He was a charter member of the National Technical Investigators Association and had spoken at their national conferences on numerous occasions.

Craig was a long-time member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church in Stafford County but after moving to Fredericksburg, had attended Spotswood Baptist Church, where he was a member of their Steadfast Men's Group. His hobbies included his passion for boys' activities and with his three sons, he coached in all of their sports. He was one of the founders of the EPWBA in Woodbridge, VA. Craig was a follower of ACC basketball for over 70 years. He was also an avid genealogist and at one time was an active member of several NC and VA genealogical societies.

Craig leaves many friends and associates of long standing represented by his honorary pall bearers: Charles Byrd, Rick Heflin, Ric Keiper, Martin McDermott, Mark Perry, Terry Plaugher, and Billy Spellings. They, along with unnamed others, were always very special to Craig.

There will be a family and friends gathering from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Spotswood Baptist Church College Building, 4105 Lafayette Blvd, Fredericksburg, VA 22408.

I am sorry to hear if your loss. I grew up across the street from your family and I remember all the great times we spent with the Emerson boys. Your family was a blessing and I´m truly sorry to hear of this passing!

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of such a great patriot as Craig was. I worked with him while I was assigned to FBI Engineering Research Facility as a Liaison Officer. Craig made a exceptional effort to do whatever he could to broaden and deepen the relationship between the bureau and my home agency. He always impressed me with his "Can Do" attitude and his innovativeness. He would give you the shirt off his back if it helped you to achieve your mission and or move your team forward to a goal. The Bureau and our nation were very fortunate to have such a fine officer who was so dedicated to preserving the safety of our great nation and our people. God rest his soul.

Craig and I met in 1961 and worked in the Radio Engineering Section of the FBI Laboratory until 1970. Craig had an inventive and creative mind with a great sense of humor. Both he and I were from NC and were basketball fans. He mourned the sinking of the US "Thresher" submarine with loss of entire crew. We both married young ladies who worked in the FBI Laboratory Document Typing unit. Craig will be greatly missed but as Christians, we know we will meet again. May God bless Clauda and family.

I was sorry to see the death of Craig. He was my first patient. He remained excited about the honor. He would announce at each visit that he was #01. The staff would always chuckle.
