Gene Self

Gene Self passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, June 20, 2022, following a long illness. His family was by his side.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathi May Self; his daughters, Karen Self Crosby (Kyle) and Stephanie Self Kerr (Robert); his adoptive daughter, Lisa Hilchey (Erik); and granddaughters, Brianna Crosby and Brooklyn Kerr. He is also survived by his sister, Annie Monroe, and various nieces and nephews.

Born in Fredericksburg, Va., to the late Benjamin and Hazel Self, Gene graduated from James Monroe High School. He began his career at Hot Shoppes and later moved on to Bassett Furniture. Gene spent the majority of his career in the construction industry working for and retiring from Bonsal America in 2007. He worked his way up the ranks to become the Regional Plant Manager. Under his leadership, the plant received many awards; and had the longest running safety records to date.

Once retired, he consulted for various companies and focused on gardening, bee keeping, golf and local politics. Before his illness, Gene also was an active member of the Caroline Ruritans. He enjoyed spending time with family and also going to the casino. Most of all, Gene enjoyed spending time with his wife Kathi and his beloved cats with occasional visits from his grand-puppy. He will always be remembered for his dry wit and sense of humor and playing pranks on his family. His laughter may be gone but not forgotten.

Visitation will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2022, at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Graveside service will be held immediately afterwards at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Cemetery. A short celebration of life gathering will happen at Roma's in Bowling Green after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Gene to the Caroline Humane Society.
