James Gilbert Obituary

James "Jim" Dunford Gilbert

James "Jim" Dunford Gilbert, 92, of Stafford, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at 7:30 a.m. He was born on July 3, 1933, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, to the late Harry Dunford Gilbert and Mary Virginia Simpson Gilbert. As the eldest of six children, Jim exemplified lifelong devotion and responsibility toward his family and friends.

A man of faith, Jim was a dedicated member of Marsh Road Baptist Church in Woodbridge, and later Ramoth Baptist Church after moving to Stafford. He served both congregations with humility and warmth as an usher and greeter, always offering a kind welcome to those around him.

Jim honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, retiring in October 1978 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. His commitment to public service continued as a civilian employee with the Department of Defense, where he retired in August 1995. Prior to his military career, he worked for nine and a half years with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Jean Elizabeth Poffinberger Gilbert; children, Craig Eugene Gilbert (Annie), James Wayne Gilbert (Dianna), and Anne Marie Gilbert Portell (Jim); and sister, Jane Gilbert Linkenhoker. He was a cherished grandfather to 13 grandchildren, James Gilbert, Andrea Irelan, John Robinson, Andrew Robinson (Janie), Daniel Hudson, Hayley Gilbert, Maycen Gilbert, Camden Gilbert, Tyler Portell (Codie), Cody Portell (Riva), Troy Portell, and Abby Portell; and was blessed with 16 great-grandchildren, Hailey, Harlee, Hannah, Hidey, Abiageal, Andrew, Nicholas, Gabrielle, Cam, Gage, Willow, Angel, Stetson, Daylon, Ronan, and Cameron. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by four siblings, Judith Rose Gilbert Leffue, Jack Wayne Gilbert, Jon David Gilbert, and Jeffrey Lewis Gilbert.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Ramoth Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to Ramoth Baptist Church in Stafford, Virginia.
