John Danahy Obituary

John Peter Danahy

April 12, 1951 - June 11, 2025

"May the Road Rise to meet you."

John Peter Danahy died on June 11, 2025 at his Wintergreen home. Brother John was born on April 12, 1951 to John Joseph and Peggy Ritchie Danahy of Fredericksburg, Va. He was educated at Montfort Academy and James Monroe High School (1969). After HS he joined the Army National Guard and proudly served his country for 6 years. At this time, he earned a Black belt in Karate and graduated from the University of Richmond with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

He had a successful banking career in Washington D.C., first with American Security Bank then The National Bank of Washington where he was a Senior Vice President. He received awards for his community service including "Rotarian of the Year", the "Paul Harris Fellow Award" and served on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club.

He left corporate banking and with two partners formed Expert Banking Services, EBS, a consulting company specializing in International Banking. John travelled extensively with his work, living in Montreal, Canada and Lima, Peru. He worked in Ecuador, Columbia, Scotland, England and France. He raced sailboats in Antigua, skied in the Alps and enjoyed sunsets on a Cayman beach. He was a devout Catholic and when arriving in a new town he would first find a Church then an Irish Pub. He said there was one of each in almost every town in the world.

He returned to Fredericksburg to care for his mother in her home until she passed at age 96. His Wintergreen home was always open for his many friends and family. He was a generous brother and uncle, the best dog sitter and a lifelong Redskins fan.

He is survived by his long-term friend, Dawn Lynn and his siblings, Stevie Larson (Peter), Patricia Quann (Larry), Barbara Ehman (Tom)and Chris Danahy.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday July 18th, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. St Mary's of the Immaculate Conception, Fredericksburg, Va.

I met John when he was looking after his mum Peggy. He was always there for her and was a good son. He loved to talk about his bountiful life abroad including London my hometown. He loved his home in Wintergreen. He would always mention it was 12 degrees cooler there. He knew I loved the cooler weather.

There will be no more tears or sickness in heaven. We will all be together in peace my dear friend John. See you soon.
Blessings love Always Andreè
PS There´s not a St Paddy´s Day that went by that I didn´t remember John. That was his favorite day on the calendar.

This is such a thoughtfully written obituary and a wonderful photo of John. It captures him perfectly. I remember going shopping with John on Xmas eve (no other day would do) in Alexandria for a present for Barbara when she was little girl. I don´t remember what it was, but it had to be placed in a very big box with fancy gift wrap and a huge bow. He wanted it to stand out under the tree. He loved his family so much. I am sending prayers to all of you. Especially Stevie and Pat, since I know you two better. Loosing a sibling is hard, and I am so sorry.

I will miss John greatly. He was a good and steady friend. He was always fun and truly full of life. I will miss the times at the bay with friends, the fun at his home in Wintergreen, and the joy of playing golf with him while he could. Rest in peace friend.

John was a classmate at James Monroe High School. He was warm, friendly, a true gentleman and a great smile! He had a sense of adventure and fun as refIected in his obituary. I am very saddened to learn of his passing.

So sorry to learn of John´s passing! A wonderful friend throughout adolescence & those early adult years. Too many adventures to count. Adventures always filled with laughter. Please: Who saw John run those beautiful Bootlegs on the old Maury Stadium turf? Don´t they bring a smile to one´s face? Amen!

I always liked being around John because he was amusing and fun. We had a good time at the Gold Cup races and the Virginia Gentlemen's dance. Amazing life journey and career. Went to Montfort Academy with my brother and me. God speed John

Stevie, I am so very sorry for your loss. I remember John from Montfort, when our German Shepherd had a litter of puppies, John wanted one. Your Mom Peggy brought John to our house to chose his puppy, he was so happy.May he rest in Gods hands, Hugs to you and family. Judy Wingert

I went to high school at James Monroe with John. I always liked him and found him a very good person. He was kind and uplifting and genuine. He was always a pleasure to be with. Even though our lives separated after graduation i never forgot him and I feel an empty space now. I also believe as he, that we shall see each other again.
