Josephine Alsop

Josephine Rosa Camp-Alsop (the Highway Queen) was born on December 15, 1940 to the late Carrie Mae and Edward Camp in Spotsylvania, VA. She was the eighth of nine children born to this union. She departed this life on July 2, 2021 at VCU Medical Center.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior on April 12, 1974, and then joined the Temple of Deliverance Holy Church of God. Josephine had the heart of a servant and was truly a phenomenal example of a praying mother through her profound relationship with Jesus Christ.

Josephine loved helping everyone and crafting, especially sewing, crocheting, and designing her extravagant hats.

She married Lewis Alsop on January 14, 1959. During their 62 years of marriage, three children were born to this union.

Josephine leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Lewis Alsop, Sr.; children, Lewis Alsop, Jr., (Linda), Pamela D. Alsop (Theodore), and Edward N. Alsop; grandchildren, Cynthia M. Alsop, Jennifer L. Alsop, Dominick D. Alsop, and Kiendra ; great-grandchildren, Jayden A. Coleman and Jayda L. Coleman; brother, Joe L. Camp; and sisters, Mary V. Coleman and Florence R. Givens (Josephus); a sister-in-law, Landonia Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Josephine was proceeded in death by her mother and father, Carrie Mae Camp and Edward Camp; four brothers, James Edward Camp, Elder William H. Camp, Sr., Raymond L. Camp, and Richard C. Camp; two sisters, Eva M. Daniels, and Dorothy B. Walters.

A viewing will be held at A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home on Friday, July 9, 2021 from 5 PM to 7 PM and one hour before the funeral service. A funeral service will be held at Temple of Deliverance HCG, on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 11 AM. The interment will follow at Temple of Deliverance HCG Cemetery.

Over the years I had many phone conversations with my Aunt Josephine Alsop and there was one conversation in particular that stood out. A few years ago I remember telling my Aunt Josephine that sometimes I would feel bad about not moving back to Spotsylvania County, and this is what she told me, "Randy, don't feel bad 'cause God places you where you're needed the most."

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, also in Me."
"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. "I go to prepare a place for you. KJV John 14:1&2
Sis Alsop (who we also called Aunt Josephine), was a sweet, humble person who loved the Lord. I never forget, in 1978 she would travel with our parents and us to
North Caroline, to Coventions, and spend a night in North Carolina with our people until they started calling her Aunt Josephine and cousin. Alot of of times she would help drive back then to help our father after he had preached so she would drive us home and she would use the CB. Her CB name was Highway Queen and my Father's name was Jolly Man. Sis Josephine Alsop, will be sorely missed. Our prayers go out to the family.

My condolences to Uncle Lewis Alsop, Sr. and the entire Alsop family. I thank God for the addition of Josephine to our family. She has been a special wife, mother, aunt, sister, cousin, friend. I have fond memories of Josephine and the Camp family as I grew up. She has been a link with Uncle Lewis, to our parents, our aunts, uncles and grandparents after they passed. She told us stories of the Alsop and Camp families and kept memories alive. God, I thank you for the loan of your precious soldier, for we forget our time on earth is not forever, but I thank you that your blessing and grace for her in the hereafter is eternal.

Lewis Alsop and family: Sorry to hear of Josephine’s demise. Aside from being cousins, we began John J. Wright School together. I visited her home in 2020 and found her and Lewis to be gracious hosts as we re-hatched childhood and family. We pray that God will comfort you. James Dyson and Miriam Pendleton families

Mother Alsop was my mentor through the years when I had attended the church she had fellowshipped with many many years. She was definitely an example for me when I was much younger as a wife and mother raising my boys. She was an encourager, and never had a negative word to say. Her radiant smile was so infectious! She was definitely a person that loved God and you could see it portrayed in her life daily! She walked it, talked it and so lived it! She will be truly missed by all who knew her..rest on now, take your rest and we will see you in the MORNING! In that great get up MORNING!
