Linda Wandres Obituary

Linda P. Wandres

October 6, 1956 - November 15, 2025

Linda Powell Wandres, 69, of Fredericksburg, Va., passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, November 15.

Linda was many things to many people - beloved mom; doting "Gamma;" a loyal friend and a fierce advocate for the things she cared about.

After graduating from Stanford University and UC Law SF, Linda became a lawyer for the Environmental Protection Agency. She won a prestigious EPA Honor Award for her work to protect Native American rights and tribal land waste cleanup.

She was a dedicated PTA president at Grafton Village Elementary, raising funds for school equipment and a brand new playground. She was an Executive Director for the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust, working to preserve historic Civil War battlefields. And she was a creative and talented writer, penning short stories, newsletters and even a book.

More than anything, Linda was caring. She adopted and deeply loved three formerly-abandoned dogs. (She would want everyone reading this to know that Pitbulls are the sweetest, most cuddly companions.) And of course, she was a superfan of Fredericksburg legend Gary the Goose (if you know, you know).

Linda will be deeply missed by her family and friends: her husband, Daniel Wandres; her daughters, Laura Wandres and Jenna Rave; her son-in-law, Patrick Rave; her grandchildren, Norah and Nico Rave; her brother, Alan Powell; and her decades-long best friend, Marvie Paulson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, S. Talmadge Powell and Dorothy Campbell Powell; and her three beloved dogs, Cara, Shadow and Chelsea.

A memorial service will be held in Fredericksburg, Va., at Christ Lutheran Church on Friday, November 21 at 1:30 p.m. She will be buried in San Francisco, Calif.

After a fire in our home, Linda offered to host my daughter,Meghann´s birthday party in her own home. This was such an unexpected kindness. Linda was always smiling and pleasant. Jenna, Laura and Daniel, my condolences to you all. Your mom made the world a better place. I know you will miss her.

I got to know Linda while we were both on the CVBT Board. Linda was a gracious and caring person to everyone as well as dedicated in all her endeavors. She took great pride in her family. May you know Linda left many good memories. To the family, may your many pleasant memories sustain you in the difficult days ahead. My deepest condolences to you all.

It is with great sadness that I hear of Linda´s passing. I had the privilege of working alongside Linda for several years at the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust. During that time, I witnessed firsthand her unwavering commitment to preserving the rich history of Fredericksburg and its surrounding areas.

Linda was always willing to go the extra mile, whether it was leading preservation efforts or organizing events. I am grateful for the years I spent working with Linda. Her kindness, wisdom, and sense of purpose made a lasting impression on everyone she met. Linda will be deeply missed, but her memory and impact will live on through the history she helped protect and the lives she touched.

Rest in peace, Linda. Thank you for everything.
